Dir 655 A4 Problem
« on: July 19, 2009, 12:01:43 AM »

Hi, i’ve purchased a Dlink Dir-655 Router 5 weeks ago. I’ve upgraded the firmare to 1.21 A4 Hardware Revision. I have an issue no matter the firmware version. When i download from bittorrent @ high speeds some times the router freezes and the only solution is to unplug and plugit back.

More info about my setup:

I have a high speed PPPOE Connection (100 mbps speeds – yes real 100 mbps speeds). Im using the router for 3 devices: 1- Pc connected via LAN port @ 1 gbps 2- laptop conected wifi on G standard with WPA2- Personal Encryption and a PPC with WinMo 6.5 conected same as laptop via Wifi.

More info about router settings:

-          Wan is via PPPOE (well since i have isp with pppoe connection logic )

-          QOS Engine is disabled. (with qos enable same behaviour)

-          Upnp Disabled

-          Pc Ip Nat ip is set in DMZ (with not dmz and port fw to my pc’s lan ip same behaviour)

-          Not using any port forward (since the DMZ) and on the other 2 devices i dont need portfw

-          Firewall is disabled (same behaviour with firewall enable)

-          No other filter enable (so i dont use router's chipset too much power )

Long story short: the lightest settings so the router wont become overwhelmed at high speed  downloads (not that this matters too much, still freezes. And yes still freezes with default settings or any other settings i’ve tried)

Behaviour: When i start downloading from bitorrent at 9-10 mB/s from time to time router freezes could happen in 10 mins could happens after 3 days. Maxium simultan connections are set to 100 in bittorrent client (so half of router maximum connections – 200 is maxium from what ive read). Why the router freezes?  Its a damn GBPS router with N draft and a pretty expensive router for home usage and you claim its a perfomant one. It CANT handle a 100 mbps  isp ?

I am almost sure is not from the speed: i did tested with 12 mBytes/s download and 12 mBytes/s (bytes not bits) at the same time for more than 2 hours and the router didnt crash . Can it be from the number of simultanions connections? I mean i set the client to half of the router capabilities. ?  What do you advise me to do ? Coz Im damn sure i didnt spent 100 euros for a gbps router with draft N that i have to reboot on average everyday.

P.S. I did have DI-524 and DIR-300 before, routers from the low-end sector. There I’ve understood thats the best they could do, but when i get a performant gbps router with Draft N I EXPECT THAT THE ROUTER CAN HANDLE A 100 MBPS CONNECTION

P.S.2 I dont think is from overheating since the router is in vertical position under the A/C

P.S.3 Bittorrent client utorrent 1.8.3 global maximum connections 100, peer conected per torrent 50, upload slots 10. Maxium torrents in client 10 from which 1 or maxium 2 for download

P.S.4 Ive tried 1.20 firmware 1.21, 1.31, even beta 1.32

Is there anything i can do so i can enjoy the internet  ? or i should give up dlink as a producer forever and look for other producer. Ya dir 655 is supposed to be a performant router and costed enough not to be in the low end sector

To be honest, I don't know if you are going to be able to find a prosumer router from any manfacturer that will keep up with those kind of torrent rates.  Torrenting something at those rates is a lot different than just downloading a file from ftp at those kind of rates.  Even having 100 max connections, there are alot of connections being opened/closed at a high rate.

AFAIK, the 655/825/855 have one of the fastest CPUs in any consumer router but maybe the OS just wasn't optimized for torrents.  check out http://smallnetbuilder.com/ for performance tests.  Also, you might want to check out the x86 version of dd-wrt.

dd-wrt on qualcom ? and yes before i bought this router ive checked smallnetbuilder.com and dir 655 was the obvious choice since i was willing to spend arround 100 euros on router. anyway to make a gbps router and not optimize for p2p seems kinda of odd at least.

how ever i found out that freezes only on pppoe isp. a friend of mine told be that happens because on pppoe the router works "extratime " to encapsulate the packages. if i reduce mtu to 1400 is there any chance to fix it?

Your asking a great deal from a mid range router if you want something that can handle 100mb connections then i think you need to increase your budget.

Whats your upstream bandwidth?

You may need to take a look at some custom firmware or a much more expensive router.

there is no and there will be no custom firmware for the 655.

This router is one of the few that handles 100 Mbit very well. I would suggest to have another look at your torrent settings. You mention that "Maxium simultan connections are set to 100 in bittorrent client" . Please explain how many up and download slot you have reserved for each and which bandwidth.

It's no so hard to crash any router with BT.

Just curious what router you was using befor the Dir 655?

It dosen't take much torrant connections befor the network starts to lag on the dir 655.
