All day I have been observing on Win 10 the flashing light on Vol 1 on the DNS-323 and my SSD C:\ drive on main PC has been saturated 100% active time.  I have been monitoring all afternoon all three drives on my PC (C: and a 2Tb and 3Tb HDDs) and there is movement between the DNS-323 Vol 1 and my C:\ drive but it goes up and down over a period of 3-1/2 hours.   The network meter gadget I use was showing anywhere between 3Mb to 40Mb of "traffic" on the main PC meter.  I have no clue what this activity is - I tried to see if Process Explorer would show me but nothing identifies hard drives or network ports that I can see.

Any idea how I can monitor the specific folders that appear to be moving?  AND why would they be moving - Win 10 File Explorer is not moving any files in the background.

I finally opened up the DNS-323 Web based control panel and went to Tools, Disk Tools and started a scan of the drive.  IT has been running for about 30 min and is only at 32% so it will be awhile to detect any errors.  When I started this scan it warned me all transfers would be inteupted and sure enough the network traffic meter went down to about 1-3 kbps while scanning.

Ok the scan finished under tools and it said success.  The first report reported for Vol 2 (500Gb) so I started it again thinking it would do Vol 1 second - it came back as success result for Vol2 again - there is no selection for which drive to scan???

• What Hardware version is your DNS? Look at the sticker behind or under the device.

What Mfr and model is the main host router?
Is the DNS getting a Dynamic IP address from the main host router? I recommend using a Static IP address ON the DNS set to 192.168.#.32 or .23.
Swap out LAN cables. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

"What Firmware version is currently loaded?" F/W 1.09 (unless it is the last resort I do not want to update - it has worked fine for years)

" Cat6 is recommended" The hardwired PC that is having a fit constantly trashing, is connected via Cat 6 and a gigabit switch, three other devices access it through WiFi - but when the hardwired PC is powered off in the afternoons, the wifi devices to not experience this trashing on the Vol1 disk, but periodically the Vol 2 blinks no matter if all devices are disconnected and powered off - this goes on for hours

"  I could but it would be a monstrous task as I would be starting from a disk that is years old and would take forever to update and then I would have to reload dozens of applications and pointing them to the NAS again (many links involved that would be broken I think.  All machines were running Win 7 until the free upgrade WHCH I AM VERY SORRY I ACCEPTED AND AM BEYOND THE REVERSIONAY PERIOD according to MS.

One suggestion that you should look into. I recommend splitting one PC HDD with Windows 10 on it and configuring two or more partitions on the PCs HDD. Then you can install Windows 7 on a 2ndary partition while having the ability to dual boot between Windows 10 and 7.

I set my Windows and Mac PCs for this. So I can keep a stable solid OS like 7 running on one partition and use the other partition for new OSs that come out while keeping a good working OS as back up if needed. I actually have 1 HDD for OSs and another HDD just for my data and my documents on my windows PC.

Something to consider.

I think, I could well be wrong because we don't have a captive version of win10, that what you are seeing is win10 being 'helpful' and indexing everything on your NAS (information about which will in all probability be sent to MS for 'analysis').

Short of reverting back to win7 (and making sure that the slurping activities are not installed as an 'update') there isn't much you can do about it unless you can switch off automatic indexing of network drives.

BTW you are not the only one that has found that win10 is NOT all it is hyped to be.  In fact I have a couple of people involved in removing and reverting back to win7 the computers of walk in clients.

I think that indexing might be the problem but no matter how much searching I have done on the internet on how to turn Network indexing off I am unsuccessful.

HOW TO TURN OFF INDEXING FOR NETWORK  DRIVES - That is my task today.  I am now convinced this is what it is doing.

Ok I figures out in the Synch system that is what the problem was - I turned it off and everything has settled down!!!

Is there a way to mark this as solved???

Would you post detailed steps on what you did to disable this Synch system so other users can gain info from it.

I TAKE IT BACK - I ONLY RESOLVED THE SYCH ISSUE FOR VOL 1. 
The Vol 2 still has a problem that the HD constantly trashes 24/4.

1)  The synch issue turned off my network traffic.  I opened the win 10 control panel and in upper right box typed synch.  It showed me the green and yellow ball labeled "Synch Center" - due to some unknown reason there was an ongoing synch set to the D-Link Vol 1.  I shut it off and the network settled down and the Vol 1 light remained steady rather than showing constant blinking.

2) Vol 2 light still blinks 24/7 even when all clients in the house are turned off and the modem plug pulled - only leaving the router on.  I finally pulled the Vol2 out of the NAS and plugged it into my Win 10 desk top EZ-dock and ran the Crystal Diskinfo program.  This gave me a CAUTION, but I cannot read the SMART data, other than to see there is a caution on the "Reallocated Sector Count".  So maybe the drive (which has 64301 hours on it) is going bad.  Does the EXT2 or EXT3 formatting system do all of this inside the DNS323?

If I am going to be purchasing another terabyte drive I am also going with a new NAS that uses NFTS so I can read a bad drive on my  Windows PC.

(I do not know how to INSERT a jpg that is located only on my desktop)  The icon "insert pic" only gives me the html code - am I supposed to insert the location on my PC?  That doesn't make sense)

There was no need to pull the drive to run the SMART test, the NAS will do it for you and email the results.

It is showing a problem with 'Reallocated Sector Count' then you have a disk that has a platter surface with problems and that only gets worse not better.

Basically the drive has a flaky surface and the drive firmware has used up all the extra space allocated for such problems.  Put the drive back in the NAS and copy all the data you can from it and then replace the drive.

Even if the drive had been formatted NTFS it would not have avoided this physical problem with the disk.  In fact it might have made it worse because it tends to cover up such defects rather than highlight them.

On 1/6/17 I still have the Vol 2 drive light flashing 24x7.  Does anyone know what if anything that signifies? One can place their hand on the top of the unit and feel the HD spinning although no devices are on-line to access it. 

What does this mean - is the DNS-323 kaput?

I disagree that one can retrieve S.M.A.R.T. data from the drive through the logs - I turned on all the logs and get a VERY VERY abbreviated set of data that does not come close to the data SMART provides via SW such as Crystal Disk running in Window.  There is no hours on in the log data.  REMEMBER THE HD cannot be read by a windows machine so the data is USELESS TO ME if I don't have a  Linux file systems readable device.

Drive Lights:
These lights will be solid BLUE when drives are connected but inactive. The lights will blink when the drives are being
accessed, formatted or synchronized. They will illuminate AMBER if a drive has failed.

Network Activity Light:
The Activity Light will be solid BLUE when there is an Ethernet connection. It will blink to indicate LAN traffic.

There doesn't appear to be any type of synchronizing going on or at least as I can tell - perhaps inside the Linux unit  itself?  I know nothing about Linux

The Network activity light is steady and the Vol 2 light NEVER stops blinking.  Bad unit isn't it?

I have disassembled the DNS-323 and removed the brand new Vol 2 drive and the hours are building on this drive showing it is in a constant state of "power on" even though the DNS-323 has the power management set to turn off after one hour of no activity.

What is the suggested replacement for this DNS-323 what I could just move the two HD and be all set to go?
