Can see printer, but cant print
« on: July 20, 2009, 02:09:30 PM »

I had a network with a DIR-614+.  The Dell PC was hardwired to the router and the printer was linked by USB to the Dell PC.  A Toshiba laptop (wireless to the router) could see and print to the Dell shared printer fine.  This worked fine once I put a trusted IP range in the zone alarm firewall on the Dell PC.  The IP addresses were all close together so one IP range worked fine.

I just changed to a DIR-655 on 19 Jul.  The configuration is the same.  The Toshiba can "see" the shared printer and lists it as the default printer, but the Toshiba can't seem to "connect" to it and actually print. It gets stuck on "connecting."  There are three PCs on this network, the Dell, Toshiba and a Compaq (also wireless).  The IP addresses are all over the map so I have a range listed as trusted on the Zone alarm corresponding to each of the three different IP addresses.  Still no joy.  D Link Support says call someone else.  The first person hung up on me after mentioning changing the printer protocol, whatever that is.   ???

Any ideas?

By changing to the 655 you've "Technically" changed the network because of the way switches work.  Uninstall the printer then reinstall and you should be OK.

It would be wise to "start over" with your printer setup.  Delete the printer from your toshiba & compaq (but don't do this from add/remove programs (XP) or programs & features (Vista/7)).

Log into your dir-655 and take a look at setup -> network setup.  Try to identify your computer through the DHCP clients table -- assuming all of your computers are configured for DHCP instead of static IP.  The name of your dell computer should be listed there.  At this point it would be wise to click on "reserve" then SAVE.  This makes your dell computer's address is always the same without having to know how to set static addresses.

Then you can go back to your toshiba and compaq and navigate to \\dellcomputer (or whatever its name is) and double-click on the printer share.  It will re-add it back and you should be good to go.

If you need me to be more specific, give us more info.  Just provide us the names of your computers and the name of the printer share.  Also make sure you have reserved the DHCP address of your Dell first. :)

 ???

ttmcmurray,

First, thanks for the help (also davevt31).  I am somewhat clueless.   :)

Second, per davevt31, I uninstalled the Epson from the main pc (DELL) using programs/features.  I reinstalled it (hard, had to do so from the Epson website to get a Vista version).  There was no difference.  Could still see the printer from the Toshiba, but not connect and print to it.

Third, how do I delete the printer from the toshiba witout using add/remove programs?  I guess from programs, click on Epson folder and click on uninstall (I am running between computers).  Or am I deleting the printer from the printers section in control panel and not/not deleting the epson program.  Maybe you mean the later.  I don't have the epson on the Compaq because I just restored the XP OS from the D drive and haven't reloaded it yet.  the compaq is a desktop and is hardwired to an old HP all in one so I haven't focused on it much--except for it inability to hold an internet connection (hence the purchase of the new router after first redoing the OS).

As for more specifics, I have vista on the main pc (dell 32 bit) and the toshiba (64 bit), the compaq is XP, at least SP2. If I am on my main PC and click on network and sharing (via the systray) and then go to my Network Map I get:  Main-PC and CherylJohnst-PC, which both go to the Johnston Network and then to the Internet.  the Compaq does not show up, I guess because it is XP??  But I get to the internet on the Compaq just the same (have not been able to see if it still has trouble holding connections b/c I haven't got past the printer issue on the Toshiba--which we need to print from).  Also, in network and sharing center, everything is "on" except password protected sharing.

Under Computers and devices (still from Main-PC) I have Cheryljohnst-PC Media player, Main-PC media player, Intel Media Server (Main-PC), Cheryljohnst-PC, Compaq, and Main-PC.  If I click on Cheryljohnst-PC I get shared and printers.  If I click on Main-PC I get Epson Stylus CX3800 Series, Microsoft Office Document Image writer, Public, and Printers.  If I click on printers, I get Epson Stylus CX3800 Series, Microsoft Office Document Image writer.  There are no printers under CherylJohnst-PC Printers (which seems reasonable).

In my control panel, printers, the Epson Stylus CX3800 Series is the default.  The Epson Stylus CX3800 Series (Copy 1) also is listed (I don't know why I get multiple copies). There is also a Microsoft Office Document Image writer and Microsoft XPS Document--I don't really know what they are.

I guess I "log into" my DIR 655 by going to the internet http://192.168.0.01??  I did that and DHCP Server is enabled.  I don't know if the hardware and IP addresses are sensitive, so I did not show them below.  The IP addresses are always what I see when I look at each computer--the IP number has not changed.  I see below that something expires in x hours and minutes.  I guess you are saying I should click on "reserve" for each client??  I will wait to do that or otherwise proceed further until I get your response, hopefully I will hear from you again.   ;D

Number of Dynamic DHCP Clients:3
Hardware Address    Assigned IP    Hostname    Expires
                                             CherylJohnst-PC 23 Hours 17 Minutes  Revoke  Reserve
                                             Main-PC 18 Hours 14 Minutes  Revoke  Reserve
Compaq 15 Hours 15 Minutes  Revoke  Reserve

Let me add on XP, to delete a printer without uninstalling its drivers click on Start -> Printers & Faxes -> right-click the printer and select delete.

On Vista go to start -> control panel -> printers, right-click the printer and select delete.

Yeah, I finally figured out you all wanted me to delete the printers from control panel/printers, not the printer software.  I deleted the printers from control panel last night and when I went to add a printer to the Toshiba, from Main-PC, it could not connect to the printer to add it.  Today, I "reserved" the ip addresses in my DIR 655 and will go try to re add the printer on the Toshiba.  Will let you know if it works, but I am not holding my breath.  Will let you know how it goes.   :)
