Network access vanished
« on: July 21, 2009, 03:17:58 AM »

Hi everybody,
I've recently bought a new dns-323 and i think it's a very good product!I've used it for about 3 weeks with 2 drives in RAID 1 configuration. Then, one of the drive failed and i replaced it with a new (identical) one. After this replacement, every time i shut down the dns-323 or i restart it, in the "Network access" page i don't see anymore the list of accesses and, of course, on the network i see only the main share "Volume_1".
I've tried to upgrade to firmware 1.08 with no luck: still the same problem.
I've downgraded to 1.07 again, but still the same problem. I've done a "Restore default settings" and tried to create new shares, but as soon as i restart the unit i can't see them anymore. :(
Can anyone help me, please?

Bye,
Roberto

No, i'm using Xp Pro Sp3.
Just another test i've done: removing one drive from the raid1 configuration make the network access visible again.
Now i've inserted again the drive to see if something changes, but for now i'm waiting for the synchronization to finish.
But i don't think this is the solution, because the sync completed correctly when i changed the drive!

Bye,
Roberto

The resync is complete, but I still have the same problem!
Any idea or suggestion about how to solve this problem?

Can you post a screenshot of your Status -> Device Info page?

I'm getting the feeling you may have more than one share.

Thanks ttmcmurry for the answer!

I've tried the scandisk of the firmware 1.08 to see if it was one drive failed. The scandisk worked well and the indicator arrived at 100%, but it stopped at 100% and for 2 hours just the right disk was working. Since the web interface became unreachable, after 2 hours and something i shut down with the front button.
I've tried also a factory reset with the button on the back of the unit, but with no luck.

Now i've decided to try to format again the raid1 (after i backed up my data, of course) to see if it was a bad-bulit raid array. The format is taking place right now.

Can you explain me what you mean by "more than one share"?

As soon as it ends the format i'll try to see if it accept again the shares, if not i'll post the screenshot. But i can tell you that for the time it worked, nothing changed in the device info page: just one volume, free space and occupied space was right and plausible and the two phisical drives was seen correctly. No printer and no ups connected and, also, no network configuration change.

Hi ttmcmurry,
i've just finished to recreate the raid1 array and now it seams to work everything perfectly! But i still have not understood what happened.

When you have time, if i don't bother you, could you explain me your feeling about "more than one share", so that if it happens (i hope not!) another time, maybe i don't need to transfer again all the data?

Thanks for your support

Bye,
Roberto

P.S. the screenshot is the following: the only difference is about the used/free space!

I need fordem/ecf or someone else to double-check this, but iirc:

If, for some reason you don't rebuild the 2nd drive (or have disabled auto rebuild) and then, depending on which bay the new drive is installed in, if a new volume is created there is a chance it could have renamed (swapped) Volume_1 to Volume_2 and you'd have two volumes.

Since you'd have an existing mapping to Volume_1, it would appear empty if it was the 2nd drive.

What I would have like to have seen happen was if you really had a Volume_2 -- which was your old Volume_1.  But now it's too late for that.  :)

Yes, i thought it too.
When i took out one disk, boot up the device (so that it recognize the drive failure), shut it down, re-inserted the disk and make it rebuilt with the "Rebuild now"  button (I had the manual rebuild option)it was to try if it was badly synched.

So, for what I understand, your suggestion to avoid this problem is to have "Auto rebuild" on, right?

In the device info page was written "Volume_1" I'm 100% sure. Where else I should have checked?

Thanks again for your explanation! I apreciated it very much!

I don't know if this clarifies but as standard drives it work like this. If you have two drives in the unit and left is Volume_1 and right is Volume_2 and lets say Volume _1 fails in the left bay and you remove it then restart the unit the right bay will become Volume_1. If you insert and new drive and format it the new drive will become Volume_2 now on the left bay. You can get it to go back to its original Volume configuration if you power the unit down and remove both drives then insert one drive that you want to be Volume_1 in either bay side and power the unit on it will keep this in memory. Then power the unit down again and insert the other drive and power the unit on and it will become Volume_2 and keep this configuration in memory.

In a RAID1 configuration both drives are Volume_1
