DIR-825 --> Not able to set DHCP reservations
« on: July 21, 2009, 10:28:20 AM »

Hello,

I just purchased a DIR-825.  Hardware ver B1.  It already came with Firmware ver 2.00 NA.  I purchased this router to replace the DGL-4300.

Here are my current problems
  a) Installation disk - The program would freeze everytime during the "search config" portion.  (Maybe this was because I already had a router?)
  b) The router will not save my DCHP reservations.  I will populate the list from the "current DHCP list"...  4 connections.  But, when I hit the save button on the top of the screen, all the data disappears.  I've rebooted the router, modem, computers, etc several times, ...but it never reserves my IP addresses.
  c) Internet connection goes dead after a short period (the "earth symbol" goes orange.)  When I log into the router, ...it will not let me reconnect.
  d) When I plug in my ethernet cables, ...the wrong LED's will show up.  (Worse, ...sometime it will show 3 ethernet connections when I only had 2!)

I'm not an expert at all.  I have the following setup.  My DGL-4300 works great, but I wanted to start to use the higher speed "N" wireless network.  (Today, I went back to my DGL-4300)
  - Linksys - ADSL modem
  - D-Link Router (DIR 825)  PPPoE to the modem.
  - Ethernet - HP MediaSmart Home server
  - Ethernet - Dell Desktop
  - Ethernet - Linksys VoIP for Vonage
  - Wireless G - 2.4Ghz - XBOX 360
  - Wireless G - 2.4Ghz - XBOX - old version connected to a D-Link Adapter DGL-3420 (for media center)
  - Wireless G - 2.4Ghz - Wii
  - Wireless N - 5Ghz - Dell Desktop (connected to my home entertainment system)
  - Wireless G - 2.4Ghz - Archos 5
  - Wireless G - 2.4Ghz - Laptop (Gateway)

As you can see.....  I have a lot of equipment focused on the entertainment industry.
Please let me know what I can do to resolve these issues.

Ok first thing upgrade the firmware on the router then reset the unit to factory after and build the config from scratch.

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir825_revB/Firmware/dir825_revB_firmware_202NA.zip

You mentioned you're using DSL, is you modem in bridge mode?

If you connect your PC directly to the modem and find out what IP address you should be able to tell if you're double NAT or not.

Please display the first 2 octets of IP address and we should be able to tell.

ok - updated to new firmware 202na, then a hard reset, then reconfig from scratch.

a)  DHCP reservation list is now available

b)  However, some IP's listed in the Reservation list are "re-listed" in the DHCP reservation list.  But only 2 of the 8 connected devices.  (one wired, one wireless).  Could you let me know if this is normal?

c)  DSL connection, with my DGL-4300, I could see in the "basic-networking" section that this is a "router" connection, not a bridge connection.  (I could select a choice.)  But I couldn't find this in the 825.  I didn't understand your question about the IP address.  To addess the modem directly from my PC it's 192.168.1.1.  Could you tell me how else I can determine bridge vs router mode?

d)  Usually, my windows home server needs to be able to config the router for port forwarding HTTP, HTTPs, and Remote desktop proxy.  I think it tries to do this with the UPNP.  But the router doesn't accept these values.  THe fields are always blank.  So, I updated it myself in the virtual server section, ...and it works.  Could you verify this for me?

e)  during the manual setup of virtual server, I tried the pulled down menu to list the available computers.  Only 2 of the 8 were listed.  (This were the same 2 that were listed in the DHCP from item "b" above.)

2 more issues....
a) can't get xbox 360 to connect.  I have 8 other devices connected (3 wired, 4 wirelss 2.4GHz g only, and 1 wireless 5.0GHz a and n mixed).  The xbox can see both networks, ...I select the G with WEP and enter in the paraphrase, then try the "test connection" on the xbox.  No connection.  I look at the router to see if it's in the list, ...not in DHCP listing, not in LAN listing, ...and not in the Wireless connections.  Then I try the A with WPA and enter in the paraphrase, the try the "test connection" on the xbox.  Again, ..no connection to router.  What should I do to configure this??  ...should I try without the paraphases?

b)  The listing of computers in the LAN section of the "status" page will show 6 of the 8 computers connected (both wired and wireless).  Then, I'll revisit the same page 1 minute later and the list is blank.

I've been running the 825 with 2.02na for 12 hours, ...besides the "minor problems" that i've listed above, network is functioning.

I've confirmed my modem has been in "bridge mode".  Linksys ADSL2MUE.

Thanks for the advice.
I will give it a try tomorrow.
I don't mind the minor gliches....  lists not showing correctly, etc.
My real goal is functionality.  (The reservation list is working now.)
My last "major" issue is the fact that my XBOX360 doesn't seem to connect.  I'm hoping that I'm not alone and that someone else will post a solution on how to get around this.

Thanks again.

MAC Filtering did not work.  (In fact, when I enabled MAC filtering for all of my devices, ...for some reason the router ignored the programmed port forwarding and virtual server settings.)

I found in the port forwarding section for XBOX LIVE (at the bottom of the applications drop down list).  Unfortunately, activating this didn't work.  (Of course, before I set up the port forwarding, I had to manually setup the DHCP reservation according to the XBOX360's MAC address.)

This problem is really strange.  When I'm on the XBOX360's network settings, it tells me that I'm connected to my network.  But, when I make the test, ..it fails saying no connection to my wireless network.  When I look at the router settings, ....I could find no mention of this device.

You don't need to forward anything for the 360 just as long as UPnP is checked in the router your should be good. Also check to see if SPI is turned off and NAT endpoint Independents is checked for both TCP and UDP, located in ADVANCED > FIREWALL SETTINGS

Ru-Fi-Oh
I assume that I had the default settings.
a) SPI was enabled  --> I just now disabled it.
b) UDP endpoint was set to "Address Restricted"  --> I just now changed to "endpoint"
c) TCP endpoint was set to "Port and Address Restricted"  --> I just now changed to "endpoint"

I've rebooted the modem and the xbox, ...unfortunately still no connection.
It feels like the router doesn't see the XBOX, ...doesn't give it an IP address, ...etc.

I've tried to connect to either of the dual band networks.

For my 2.4GHz settings, ..I have now enable G and B.
In the advanced settings, I have now disabled WiFi protected setup.
Doesn't work....

For my 5.0GHz settings, ..I have enabled N and A.
I've changed to WPA only for security settings.
WIFI protected setup is still disabled.

With DIR-825
When connected by ethernet, ....everything works great.
With wireless, ...the xbox network test show that the xbox cannot communicate with my network.  (It's doesn't even get to the part where it tries to communicate with the internet, ...or 1 step further to xbox-live.)

When connected wirelessly with my DGL-4300, ....everything works great.

DLink.  Is there a resolution to this issue yet?  I experience this same problem and am aware of many other forums where folks have been complaining about this.  I've seen beta firmwares posted for a number of weeks, but we need an official final tested firmware to resolve the XBox 360 connectivity problem.

To summarize, I can connect my phone, a mac, a Vista PC, two XP laptops, and a Mac with no problems.  I'd actually had very serious issues maintaining an Internet connection until I updated to the latest firmware today.  The new firmware resolved the Internet connectivity issue, but the Xbox360 connectivity issue still remains.  I see both the 2.4 and 5.0 ghz networks from the 360, can connect, but then do not get an IP address.  I've boycotted Netgear, have had fair experiences with Linksys, and now my first experience with DLink....not so good unfortunately.
