Hi! Thanks in advance for any help!

I have been using a DIR655 for a few years. Im a novice user who can kind of navigate the interface.

I had been getting decent speeds (around 76 mbps), I knew that I had to get a better modem, because my internet is Comcast 200 mbps and I didn't have a DOC 3.0 modem. In the meantime, I decided to hook up internet in my detached garage using another router I had sitting around, a Cisco router. I followed some instructions online on how to configure the Cisco in bridge mode. The Cisco modem has a mode for using the thing as an access point, so I set that up to run as AP in the Cisco interface.

I got everything rebooted, and I got the internet out in the shop running off the access point. The wireless out there was going 90-130 mbps, I was excited! Then I came inside to where the Dlink router is hooked up as the primary router, and tried the wireless. The wireless speed test lagged a little bit, not ping lag, it was a unusually slow ramp up in speed over a few secs. The wireless would only top out at 20-40 mbps. The upload was unaffected. The ethernet connection was still very fast (90-130 mbps, like out in the shop on the wireless and lan).

I went out and bought a DOC 3.0 modem and hooked it up. Same situation. Super fast wireless and ethernet from the Cisco at around 190-230 mbps, inside on the Dlink the ethernet was super slow, and the wireless stayed the same at 20-40 mbps. The ethernet has sped up over the last 24 hours since upgrading the firmware and runs 230 mbps on ookla, but for some reason the fast.com test (that use to be just as fast as ookla), wont go over 70 mbps, when I was getting 230 on it before the firmware upgrade.

Any help would be great, but I will most likely need childlike instructions. lol :)

I wanted to isolate the issue so I tried something.

I disconnected all the lan ports from the Dlink, Reset the router, and tried the speed tests again with no possible interference from the Cisco modem. The ethernet works great, 230 mbps. The wireless looks like it wants to go over 50 mbps, but almost every test is 45 mbps. This is after flashing the new firmware. The unit had been reset many times and worked great for years to deliver near the same wireless speed as connected....sigh

LOL...

Yes Wireless N is old. Yes its old router.

The point is it was working much faster BEFORE I upgraded the firmware and got a docis 3.0 modem. hehe

Dual band setting might have changed?
What is it 40/80 hz? Or 20/40?

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
  Link> >FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

20/40Mhz

I know the 655 can do 100/3 as I recently had mine online last August with 3 xbox ones connected. However I didn't have it's wifi enabled as I had a DIR-890L in AP mode as the main host wireless.  :D
