Incorrect password - It's not incorrect!
« on: July 12, 2017, 01:32:40 PM »

Hi,

I'm a little frustrated as I can't get into my ShareCentre at the moment.

I noticed the cooling fan was running at full speed and the room temperature is low (Normally it hardly makes a sound). So I tried to log into the web interface to do a soft reboot only to find it won't accept my password. I haven't had it long and don't log in very often. I'm the only one with access and no one else uses it. I've only used the one password and IE had saved the password and prefilled it for me, so I know the password is correct as it's auto entered. I have tried manually typing the password myself but I still can't get in.

Has anyone had this before? I work in IT and never believe a user when they say "the password is the right one", but believe me, it really is the correct password!

Is it possible that someone could have hacked in and changed the password? After all, it is connected to the outside world via my router....

Is there an easy way in or is my only option to reset all of the defaults?

Thanks for any help.

A few points.

You need to think about why the unit was running warm (fan running at full).  Unless there is a problem with the unit the only thing that will trigger that is a lot of use of the disks.  Check your router logs for outside activity and if necessary disconnect the unit.  In fact it might be a good idea to disconnect the unit from the router and see if it cools down (if it does the unit most probably isn't faulty).

Unfortunately the only way to reset the master password is to do a factory reset and this also clears all the other user settings.  I would do this and then access the unit without it being connected to the internet.  We use a cheap router to supply DHCP to the NAS and a single computer and nothing else, this allows for checking the data on the NAS and, if there is anything nasty there, it prevents it getting out into the main network.

If you find evidence of hacking I would be inclined to reformat and restore from backup.

Edit:  I add this for the sake of completeness.  If you have set a user password as well as the master login password don't mix them up.  I knew one guy that was trying to login to the settings using his user password which didn't work.  When pushed to use the correct one it resulted in a red face.

What FW version is currently loaded on the DNS?
What region are you located?

What Mfr and model # ISP modem and main host router are you using?
How is the DNS connected to the internet?
