router drops Internet speed
« on: July 24, 2009, 03:02:36 PM »

I have had the DIR-825 since the beginning of the year connected to AT&T DSL Internet 3GB. I just upgraded to their 6GB download speed and didn't see any change in speed and suddenly I couldn't view my SlingBox anymore outside the house. I connected one computer directly to the modem, ran the AT&T speed test and got >5GB download and @700 upload. Wired via 1GB network back to the router, ran the speed test and it dropped to @4GB download and 120 upload.

I called AT&T, they checked everything, and said there was nothing wrong. I then spent almost an hour on the phone with D-Link including getting passed to 3rd level support. I knew something was wrong when the guy told me that since it was only a 1GB router, I shouldn't expect to get faster than 1GB Internet download.

The router is still running the 1.00 firmware and these are the changes they made me try so it's still sitting at these settings:
- Change the WAN from Auto 10/100 to 100 only.
- Change MTU to 1482 in my PPPoE settings
- Change Firewall Settings to turn SPI off. He said the router is still providing a firewall though.

He wanted me to download the 1.01 firmware but I balked and he said it probably wouldn't do any good. It ended with him wanting me to call AT&T back and set the modem to bridge mode. I then need to call them back and set the PPPoE again. This 3rd level support guy was very rude and am hoping to avoid calling them again.

Before I go through the hassle of calling AT&T and trying this bridge mode, I am hoping somebody out there has a solution or has the Elite 6GB service from AT&T and are having it work correctly.

Help! :-)
Thanks,
Jeff

First off, your AT&T DSL is measured in Mb/s.  So, I assume you upgraded to their 6Mb/s service...

Visit this site and do a tweak test.  See what the test results say and follow the instructions to resolve.  You likely need to increase your Receive Window size if you are running XP.

Sorry my mistake in the GB vs MB.

I have 3 machines and 2 are running Vista so the tweaks on that web page say not to do anything for Vista. When I was running the speed tests yesterday, I had one XP machine and one Vista machine reporting the same results.

Hence, that leads me to believe it has to be the router slowing down the Internet speed. I find it hard to believe though that there's not some setting in all the router firmware that solves this. If I can't get this fixed, I'll have to go back to the 3MB service since that was working fine.

Nobody here has AT&T DSL??

I have AT&T DSL and Comcast cable modem.  Call me crazy...

What make and model DSL modem do you have?  Firmware version?

Proper MTU setting for PPPoE is 1492.  I'm confused a bit here.  Is your DSL modem handling PPPoE now?  Where did you change the MTU setting?

If you want to enable bridge mode and use the DIR-825 to do PPPoE, then use the following link to get instructions for your modem.  Hopefully this matches your modem setup since its an old Bellsouth page.  We still use this here in Florida even though AT&T bought Bellsouth a couple years back.

Also, while logged into the DSL modem there is a tab to check for a firmware update of the modem.  Do this BEFORE you change to bridge mode.  make sure the latest is installed.

AT&T just replaced my old Speedstream with the Motorola 2210-02, software 7.7.5r8. It did say when looking in the configuration that I'm connected at 6016 Kbps (Downstream), 768 Kbps (Upstream). On the Check Connection, everything passed except DNS.

The setting for PPPoE is under Setup - Manual Internet Connection Setup - MTU. It was set to 1492 and in D-Link troubleshooting they had me set it to 1482. I'm connecting to the Internet so I'm assuming that means the modem is handling PPPoE. It's just decreasing my speed. BTW, one test they tried doing is connecting the modem directly to one of the router's LAN ports instead of Internet but that didn't let the home network work.

There isn't a tab in the modem to check for a firmware update, only to install a firmware update that I already downloaded. I tried checking with AT&T and they couldn't tell me and couldn't find it on the Motorola site either.

BTW, just to show the numbers from running the AT&T DSL speed test:
Connected directly to computer:
Download = 5.117 Mbps
Upload = 661.48 kbps

Connected via router:
Download = 4.161 Mbps
Upload = 119.90 kbps

The upload of the bottom is the one that's really killing me because I can't stream my Slingbox or MP3's anymore.

Try to switch the modem to bridge mode and let the DIR-825 do PPPoE.  Set MTU int he DIR-825 to 1492 and I recommend you use OpenDNS.  Its free, fast and if you setup a free account you also get anti phishing.  www.opendns.org

I did a Google search on that Motorola modem and found several forums where people talk about speed issues when connected to a router.  I have a Netopia business class router from Bellsouth so cannot comment further.

FYI, after setting the modem in bridge mode, the same speeds occurred. Talking again with D-Link support, they had me enable Multicast streams but that didn't do anything. I was running the 1.00 firmware and even though the only "fix" for the 1.01 firmware was SharePort, he was pretty sure that would fix the problem.

I installed teh 1.01 firmware and bang, right back up to the speed it should be. Thanks for the help and suggestions along the way!

Perhaps I spoke too soon. Everything was working fine last night but when I got up this morning the router had disconnected from the Internet. Since it is now controlling PPPoE, I had to restart the router and then the Internet came back. I sure hope this is was just a fluke and not going to be a consistent thing I have to do after inactivity.

I have Comcast and have tested to whits end.  The only issue I'm having is this 825.  Once I connect directly to the cable modem I'm off flying.  Some times I have decent speed and other times it seems this router doesn't want to respond.  Simply unplug from the router and connect to the cable modem and the problem goes away.  Been with DLink for years and recommended their products but I'm having serious doubts now.

I've had Comast techs here before and all tests out "perfect" believe it or not.  I've even been doing a lot of testing with inSSIDer to see who's using what WiFi channels to prevent interference.  Only running 802.11g.

I know this thing is capable of being very fast but I go through times too often where it crawls and it's doing that again now.

Any tweaks or ideas?

 DIR-825 Version: B1     Firmware Version: 2.02NA
I am having the same issue, but I am on a cable connection. Doing dslreports/speed I see that it will dl/ul at full rate for approx 1-2 seconds,  then speed drops down. Connected directly, 6700kbps/800kbps. Through the dir825, 3500/250. Definitely a firmware/setting issue in the dir825.

Does anyone know if the new f/w is fixing this issue then?  I assume if you update to the 1.12 you cannot go back to 1.1.  I know 1.11 states this but 1.12 does not.

Well..I have the same issue....and I have A1 with firmware 1.11NA .  I did just go through the "problem" with losing connectivity altogether, because "advanced DNS" was enabled....read other posts on that topic.

Now I am getting the slow-down instead. Uplink speeds down from 2kbits to 200kbits (yes, bits not bytes, and I understand the difference.)

My biggest problem is that it isn't just across to the modem (and out the internet) it is through the DIR-825 router to my NAS as well!  Files which took 5 minutes are taking an hour...eek!

So, the trick to see if the router was hosed was a simple unplug-power then re-poweer the router. If that repairs the speed...then it is obviously a problem with the buggy 1.11NA firmware. (sorry DLINK, but hey..)

Now, about that beta firmware, I have read too many uncertain stories as of the time of this post to try it myself. But please, anyone (not a vendor) who feels they have sufficient evidence that it repairs the A-series firmware problems, please chime in!

For now,

Having exactly the same problem here. DIR-825 does not seem to work properly in combination with my docsis 3.0 modem (120Mb down / 10 Mb up). The highest connectionspeed is somewhere around 16 Mb down / 5 Mb up!!
When is use another router (Sitecom WL-308) i've got full speed!
I've had contact with techsupport from D-Link and they admit something is wrong but they can't help it!!??

Suggestion is to buy another router :s....

I am not happy with this situation, it has taken a lot of my costly time to find out that the problem is the router and not the moden from UPC!

D-LINK, i won't buy any of your products again!
