Newbie looking for help with setup/speed problems
« on: July 27, 2009, 10:26:30 PM »

 >:(

I just replaced an older Netgear router with the D-Link 825 and am having severe wireless speed issues - hoping that some of you may be able to point me in the right direction...

During Setup, the following 2 WiFi networks seem to have been created:

(1) a 5GHz Wireless LAN with my own named SSID of "FREDDIE"  (Mixed N & A)

(2) a 2.4GHz Wireless LAN with a fixed name SSID of DLINK (Mixed N, G & B)

I have Comcast Cable internet service and used to get download speeds of between about 10-14 Mbps

I have the following devices connected wirelessly:

- Laptop Running XP, Built in A/B/G adapter - currently connected to 5GHz FREDDIE n/w seem to be getting download speeds of < 1Mbps!!    [I also see the 2.4GHz DLINK network - I'm guessing I should maybe connect to this instead ?]

- Laptop Running Vista, Built in A/G/N adapter - currently connected to 5GHz FREDDIE n/w (but also see the 2.4GHz DLINK n/w)  -  getting about 10Mbps

- iPhone 3GS (Built in "G" wireless ?) - Connected to 2.4GHz DLINK n/w & seems to work ok  (does not even see the 5GHz FREDDIE n/w).

- Tivo HD DVR with Built-In B/G adapter - seems to be connected to 2.4GHZ DLINK n/w (does not seem to see 5GHz FREDDIE n/w)  -  This device is used for streaming AV content from NetFlix & I am having lot of problems since I switched to the new D-Link 825 - Stream keeps freezing, but will restart after couple of mins

Biggest issue is the Tivo HD as the NetFlix stream keeps freezing...

Any suggestions much appreciated  -  please let me know if I need to provide any more info on router settings etc.

Thanks

I'm no expert, ...but this would be my suggestions.

Try downloading the latest firmware
--> Hardware Version B
--> 2.02NA (The NA is short for North America)
--> 2.02EU (The EU is short for Europe and Canada)

NA
ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir825_revB/Firmware/dir825_revB_firmware_202NA.zip

EU
ftp://ftp.dlink.de/dir/dir-825/driver_software/DIR-825_fw_revb_201EUb15_ALL_multi_20090612.zip
ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/dir_products/dir-825/DIR-825EU_B1_Beta.zip

--> Hardware version A
(This is a "Beta" Version  - Please read the following link before downloading)

It all depends on where the router is situated in relation to your adapters.
How far away, what does it have to pass through, do you use them all at the same time (gaming and streaming while testing might not provide the best results) etc.
Of course, the best is to compare it to your old router, if the locations are the same.
I personally am very disappointed and haven't seen any difference, unless if you are in the same room as it (in which case, it's the fastest I've ever had), but then what's the point of wireless.

It is why I am trying to know if getting a single band router like the 655 could provide me a stronger signal, even if it means not having the 5ghz band.

The Tivo HD DVR is B/G only as you know so it'll only see the 2.4Ghz signal. The 5Ghz band is better suited for media (video/audio) streaming because of the decreased interference and higher Mbps but also has less range. If you wanted your Tivo & Netflix to stream over the better suited 5Ghz band *and* the router and Tivo are somewhat close you may want to look into a 5Ghz capable bridge. I use the Dlink DAP-1522 I picked up from newegg.com for $90.

I use it for my PS3 and Xbox (Netflix as well) and after some tweaking it streams perfectly with no issues (stutter/stops etc.) In fact I watched Let The Right On In through Netflix on my 360 last night in HD and it didn't stop or skip once.

One tweak I made on the 825 that helped (at least on the 5Ghz band) was disabling Traffic Shaping (found in the advanced menu -> wireless.) You may want to try that and see if it improves.

Regardless if you plan to stream any type of HD video your best bet is a 5Ghz capable bridge.

Thanks Guys

Apologies, my networking knowledge is not very strong, so I'm just trying to figure out exactly what is a network bridge ?

Sounds like it allows you to connect several wireless or mixed wired/wireless networks together ?

Presumably I would connect the TIVO to the 5GHz bridge using ethernet cable & then the 5GHz bridge would communicate wirelessly with the DLink-825 - correct ?

So far I am disappointed with the performance of the 825 - my previous router was 2.4GHz B/G & I expected 2.4GHz G performance to at least be as good with the 825.
I understand that 5GHz band should be better, but the 825 is only about 5 feet from my Tivo box, separated by thing drywall...

Mymontreal.....
Please keep in mind that:
 - 5GHz is N, or A, or mix N/A  (neither B, nor G will work on 5GHz)
 - 2.4GHz is B, or G, or N, or B/G or G/N or B/G/N.  (A will not work on 2.4GHz)

Since your Tivo only has an adapter for B/G, ...it can ONLY use the 2.4GHz.

In order for your Tivo to improve, you must:
  a) purchase a new wireless adapter for the Tivo (capable of N), or
  b) purchase a wireless bridge, ..and then connect the bridge with an ethernet wire to the Tivo.
