setting up VPN
« on: July 29, 2009, 07:23:33 AM »

I set up my home pc as a VPN server. When I am behind the router, I could log on to my VPN by going to my pc's ip address. (Say, 191.168.1.116). I couldn't figure out how to log on to my VPN when I am outside of my LAN. Any help?
thanks in advance.

You will have to make a port forwarding or Virtaul server to your local VPN server.
By doing this you will allow an external connection to your router to be forwarded to your VPN server.

When I set up the VPN, I put an ip address range. (used this link : http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/xp_vpn_server.htm)

On step 14: I put 192.168.1.120 thru 192.168.1.125.  (my VPN server is at 192.168.1.121)

On my router admin, I also did port forwarding. I couldn't enter the range, instead I just entered 192.168.1.121.

But still, how do I hit my VPN server outside of the network? When I look up my ip, it resolves to something like 24.1.xxx.xxx. When I try to create a connection to this ip address, I get a "Cannot connect to the VPN..." error.

try this

change IP to your VPN server

and in VPN Connection properties (client)  you have to enable

if you want to use your server login

and on server on incoming connections properties

hope this works

I still get

error 800: unable to establish vpn connection. The VPN server may be unreachable or security parameters may not be configured properly for this connection.

Also, when i try to ping my outside ip address, i get destination host unreachable.
