How many connections on home router?
« on: November 26, 2007, 09:36:16 AM »

Last week I purchased a DIR-655 hoping to improve the range and performance of my wireless connections and reduce lag time when playing XBOX 360 on XBOX Live as well as online computer games.  I have 6 computers in my house, 3 wireless and 3 wired plus the XBOX 360.

After installing the new router, connections kept dropping so I called tech support.  The tech told me that home routers can't support more than 5 connections at a time?  I was completely surprised by that and never had a problem with connections dropping with my old Netgear router.  Is that really the limitation of the DIR-655?

No, the router can support much more than 5, but you have to understand that the more computers you use to connect to the router, the more bandwidth you are using up which will result in a decrease in speed.

I understand the issue with bandwidth will decrease with the more computers that are connected.  I was just surprised that the tech was being adamant about the 5 connection limitation when I questioned it.  Now if I could only get the DIR-655 to work reliably for me, I will be happy.

What about the 655 is unreliable?
Have you tried setting static QoS rules?

I spent the entire afternoon on the phone with D-Link support working through connectivity issues.  It was "try this, reboot...try this,   reboot...".  Each time I have to call back I get someone else but not resolution.  My family is home for the evening and I had to get the network going again so I switched back to my always reliable Netgear router and things are up and running.  I would really like to get the DIR-655 going but I need someone at D-link that cares to work with.

Who is the ISP?  What firmware is on the router?  Is the connectivity issues on wired or wireless, or both?  What wireless client cards are being used and are any of them N, or just G, or a mix of both?

The ISP is RoadRunner.  The firmware is 1.10.  The issues are with both wired and wireless.  All wireless cards are G.

Ok, what firmwares have you tried and does it make any difference what firmware you use?

If you're not using N and all cards are G, have you tried maybe disabling the N functions to see if that stabilizes the connection?

Do the logs on the router indicate anything odd that might be causing the disconnect?

I switched back to my old Netgear router for now.  I exchanged the DIR-655 for another one and hope to get to the install sometime today.  After working quite a bit with D-link support and getting nowhere, I'm hoping that the router was defective and that the replacement will work.  I really hope it does because I've heard its a great router.  Just can't prove it by me yet.

You are in the same boat as everyone else.  We have TWC/RoadRunner, DIR-655, and constant rebooting..  What else is new...?

Yea, but I don't have to be in that boat.  I can return this thing within two weeks if it doesn't work out.  I'd like to be able to sail with it but I won't go down with the ship.
