Distance
« on: July 30, 2009, 01:20:34 PM »

Just installed my 655. I bought it because my office did not have a signal above poor most times. After installing I was excited to see the improved range and speed. Imagine my disappointment when performance was equivalent to my old Linksys. :( I have a Gateway laptop with a Broadcom BCM 43xx wireless network card. Got any advice? Thanks.

just out of curiousity how far are you from the router usually?  and what is your signal strength like?

This goes back to information in which you can get everywhere but here are the short/tips:

1. arrange the antenna in which the left and right are in a angle while the middle is straight up (this is if the router is laying down). Refer to your manual for that

2. keep it away from metal objects. If it is near a metal object, you can use that as a guidance if you want. Metal reflects the wifi signal making it a directional. (hopefully that makes sense, if not sry)

3. People say that wifi falls so its best to keep it as high as you can. (for me, my router is downstairs but it is in the center of the house with one wall next to it. Inside the wall is pure metal but it is ok cause i dont need wifi going to my backyard)

4. There is this thing called wind surfer (this will explain about the metal reflecting and such)

5. Since its a 2.4ghz router, you can upgrade the antennas but you have to upgrade all 3 of them for best result (im using the cheap gigaware radioshack brand antenna. Cost me $2.27 for 2 antenna 7dBi since it is a TNC adapter. I bought the adapter that converts TNC to SMA) The antenna actually works surprisingly. I went from low to very good both on my wifi G and my wifi N. This gets pricey so try to avoid this if you want.

6. Get all wifi N cards, that increases the distance

7. double check your settings, make sure its sending 100% of the signal, and that you set to 20/40mhz.. etc.

For me, when i had problems with distance, i adjust my antennas.

but not it is \|/

from before to after, it went from low to good (with original antenna)

Hopefully this information helps! ^__^
