Connecting a phone through a VPN

I would like to connect a phone for a remote worker. I have a gateway to gateway VPN running, I have taken a phone that I configured on the local network and plugged into the remote network but the base unit does not seem to be able to find it, I can ping it form the local network.  I have also enabled VPN on the base unit. When I check the phone through administrator it says that the has changed and cant find the new ip and might need to enter the ip manually. Have I missed somthing? can i configure the ip manually

I am assuming you enabled the VPN Access on the Base Unit before you configured the phone. Is that correct? If not, then you will need to reconfigure the phone again. The second thing you will need to check is whether you can access any resources behind that remote location through the tunnel. That way you can rest assured that the tunnel is working fine and focus on other troubleshooting steps.
