Can I re-flash the firmware? Is this thing dead?
« on: July 30, 2009, 09:51:37 PM »

Hi guys. I just purchased a DNS-321.

I was excited at first - the thing took in my two 1 TB Western Digital Caviar Black drives no problem and formatted them to RAID-1. Shortly afterwards, I notice that I can upgrade from FW 1.00 to FW 1.02. After applying the FW and waiting a while, the thing refuses to boot up - whenever I plug it in, the Blue Power LED will blink constantly. I popped out the drives after being in there for an hour and they were BLAZING hot. Almost hurt to touch them. Is this normal? I also can't log in to the webpage now or anything, probably because the router is no longer picking it up.

I'm running Windows 7 RC 64-bit. I didn't install any drivers or anything.

One thing to note -

When I initially opened this ting up and plugged it in to my network, it showed up as a 'Storage' device  in the network center. After the attempted FW upgrade, it now shows as two individual computers (which I cannot access), named DLINK-E94FA8 and NAS.

Any ideas?

Is it possible to reflash this thing with firmware, or is it dead? Also, should the drives be getting so hot that it almost hurts to touch them?

Thanks,

Paul

Paul, did you try the 2 common fixes for most PC stuff in general? Either push the power button on the front to set it or push the reset button on the back of the unit itself? I had to use the reset once, I cannot remember exactly how long you hold it though, check your manual.

And if you already did those 2 things, then I defer to tech support who will be happy to help you out I am sure.

Take care and have a great long weekend coming up, or at least we have one coming in SK...  :D

I have tried both the reset button as well as holding down the power button. I unplugged the power cable and then reconnected, and it does the same thing :(.

One more question - it seems to try and boot up right when I plug in the power cable. Is it supposed to do this, or am I supposed to press the power button before it tries to boot up?

Looks like I may have to place a call to tech support...

EDIT:

I read that you need to hold down the reset button for about 12 full seconds for the reset to initiate (I was probably only trying for like 5). Hopefully this will fix any issues I have - I'll try when I get home later tonight.

Should I be concerned with how hot those drives were running, though? Is there a way that I can monitor there actual temperature?

Blue,

once you can access the units web interface, the devices temp is listed in the UI. This will allow you to get a general idea of the units internal temperature. In 1.03 we have added SMART data which allows you to see actual drive temperature.

Also definitely hold down the reset for atleast 10 seconds, I would also take off the face plate and make sure there is no obstruction to the power button behind the face (button being constently held down). If you reset it and it still does not stop blinking them most likely something happened during the firmware upgrade causing the flash to become corrupted. The only fix for that would be to replace the unit or RMA it through D-Link.
