Novatel 3G, Windows ICS and DIR655
« on: August 05, 2009, 02:03:44 PM »

I'm using nTelos air card internet with a Novatel Ovation card.  This Novatel card is NOT compatible with ANY routers that I can find so I've been using it connected to a Windows XP computer and using Inernet Connection Sharing to allow my network to share that internet connection.  It works fine but I need to go wireless and I already have a DIR655 that I bought last year for another WIFI service I had that was junk service.  So instead of purchasing a new wireless access point I was wondering if this DIR655 could be setup to do that instead.

So, what I need is info on how to make a DIR655 do a simple wireless access point's job and since I'm "router challenged", I'd appreciate it if someone could tell me all the stuff I need to set to make this work, if it will work for this that is.

Thanks,

I am not sure what you mean by "I need to go wireless".  Do you mean that you don't want the connection to be using your laptop? I am not familiar with the aircard, is it USB? I am assuming so since you said it wasn't compatible with any router. I would like to try one of those out myself on my 655 sometime.

I am using my HTC Magic to act as the internet connection which is connected VIA USB.

The temporary setup I have thus far because I just moved and have yet to have my household services set up, is this:

Router setup:
Manual Internet Setup.
Dynamic IP assignment

Ethernet cord in the WAN port of the 655 going into my Laptop's ethernet port.
HTC Modem in Network Settings, Shared. Chose the Local Area Connection 1 as the interface for internal network during the wizard.

Finished the setup. Done. Clients can connect to the DIR-655 and access the internet. No wireless Ad-Hoc network needed which has many benefits.

Connect one machine via LAN to the DIR.
Change LAN IP address of the DIR to an unused address in your ICS network.
(As ICS defaults to 192.168.0.1 you can use 192.168.0.254 for example)
Disable DHCP server and DNS Relay in the network settings
Disable UPNP and Multicast in the advanced Network settings.
Configure the wireless according to your needs.
Save settings and restart the router.
Use only the LAN ports to connect the DIR to your network, it will act as a switch with accesspoint now.
Leave the WAN port empty.
