That the D-Link DIR-655 is merely a rebadged U-Media WRT-390U?

Does this mean that all these problematic firmwares (and constant references to the "Taiwan Division") are actually coming from U-Media?

It's how you look at it: the combination of hardware components is not exclusive to any brand or label. As a matter of fact, 90% of all PC hardware (graphics, motherboards etc) comes from only 3 manufacturers (Foxconn, MSi and another one)! They produce and label the hardware (according to the brands' specs) for all known brands (ATi, Asus, PoV, Asrock, etc etc). This is also the case with routers, switches and so on.

So there can be a lot of similar parts used, but the firmware will be different.

Don't know. But I would be surpised if a completely unknown C-label to have (the funds to develop) top-of-the-line firmware.

I think you should check out the trendnet TEW-633GR firmware emulator on their website.  Its pretty clear that Ubicom provides the base firmware and then D-link provides that add-ons like shareport, etc.

Even the wording is the same, D-link 655:
"To protect your privacy you can configure wireless security features. This device supports two wireless security modes including: WPA-Personal, and WPA-Enterprise. WPA provides a higher level of security. WPA-Personal does not require an authentication server. The WPA-Enterprise option requires an external RADIUS server."

TEW-633GR:
"To protect your privacy you can configure wireless security features. This device supports two wireless security modes including: WPA-Personal, and WPA-Enterprise. Yeah, definitely.  D-link def has higher quality radios and stuff, but same Ubicom platform and base firmware.

I wonder if the trendnets have the freezing problem with dns relay.

Perhaps I will check out their forum, at least if they have one. Which brings me to a curious thought: if Trendnet has no support and/or forum all, could it be that the people with issues on this forum actually have a cheap,  Trendnet router but to get their problems fixed they just pretend they have a Dlink?
