Yes, I would agree with the statement of "You Get What You Pay For" and what we paid for in our Asia Pacific region is the promise of compatibility with final 802.11n, be it firmware upgrade or hardware replacement.

So, most likely the consumers with DIR-655 will be getting a hardware replacement since DIR-655 is not compatible with the final 802.11n due to hardware incompatibility.

I just posted about this in the dir-655 forum.. the 600 mbit service requires 2.4 & 5GHz bands to work in addition to a specific antenna configuration.  The 655 has only a 2.4 GHz tranceiver.. so with its 3x2 antenna configuration you'll get 300mbit out of it.

Personally I don't have a problem with this.  D-Link has offered dualband routers & WNICs for well over a year now at a higher price point.  Let me re-emphasize what I've said on countless posts:

You get what you pay for

No replacement needed.  It will be 11N compliant even without dual band and with "only" 300Mbit.
Just a firmware update will be needed.

@chaicka: Well according to what they say on the internet, draft 2.0 n product will constantly get the final n certification when this standard goes final. The final n certification also has 3 more optional tests to cater for 450Mbps and 600Mpbs wireless device classes. So yes you will likely get a final n certification DIR-655 firmware to upgrade when the time comes and you definitely are not going to get a free HW replacement as you thought.

Well, I guess it means anything from 300Mbps to 600Mbps would be within the 802.11n final specifications. Thus, since this 655 is capable of 300Mbps, h/w replacement seems not going to happen. Let's see what is the final 802.11n specifications then.

It is compatible. The 655 (hardware) just does not support the full featureset of 802.11n, which requires other hardware. The 802.11n certification will nonetheless not be an issue, since the certification does not require some features to be present. And the 655 wasn't advertised as supporting that full featureset (only draft), so I don't see why Dlink needs to provide a replacement to 655 users.

If you mean: "In order to make full use of 802.11n you need to buy new hardware" you are correct.

Hi,

Well...you ALWAYS have to buy new hardware when new technology is developed....thast why we went ahead and bought the Draft-N DIR-655.

Who woulda known they were gonna throw in the 450 Mbps and 600 Mbps speed levels in the .11N standard...well maybe some of you did who may have taken the time to actually read the drafts of the standard as they have been issued.  I guess its like our Congressmen and Senators, and dare I say President who vote on laws without actually having read the stuff they were voting on...
