Cisco AnyConnect VPN Issues
« on: August 10, 2009, 06:20:13 PM »

I use a DIR-825 router with my company laptop. The company recently switch VPN from a Nortel client to Cisco AnyConnect. I don't have any issue connecting to the company network using the Cisco VPN and don't have any issue staying connected.

My issue is certain company web site that I have to login plus mainframe and AS400 boxes. The first time I access a web site it takes 45 seconds for the login box to appear. If I close the browse and access the same site later it will open right away as long as I haven't disconnect from the VPN. The same thing happens with the AS400 boxes. For the mainframe I received an error that it can't resolve the hostname for the first 5 attempts, on the 6th try I can access.

I know it is the DIR-825 as I plugged the laptop directly into the cable modem and had no issues. I've open a support case with Dlink, but they haven't responded to me since July 30th.

Does anyone have any experience with this Cisco VPN client or any of what setting I need to change on the router?

Try manually specifying DNS servers for your tunnel.

Like what?  To OPENDNS servers?  Hey Dlink support tech, are you guys reading about the 825 B1 complaints?  Can we get an ETA on when they will be fixed?

better yet, your companies DNS servers.

As for the DIR-825, all I can say is that every post is read or at least glanced over, I don't know the depth of 825 issues, nor am I inclined to get involved.

So two questions, where in the router setup do I enter the DNS servers address and is it my company's DNS server or my IPS?

I am saying on the VPN software you should be able to specify your works DNS servers.  Or even manually entering your ISPs on your PC for it's normal connection will probably fix the issue.

The Cisco VPN software is provided by my employer and doesn't offer any options to enter the company's DNS server.

The issue isn't that I can't connect to the public internet or the company's intranet with the DIR-825 router, it is on selected web applications it takes a 45 seconds to get the login window. Once I login, I'm fine until I disconnect from the VPN.

I've added the OPENDNS servers to the router's DNS and it didn't help. Actually some of the web sites I couldn't even access. Still waiting for Dlink support to respond to my July 30th email. I'm also waiting for Christmas, wonder which will come first?

I am having a very similar issue.  Connecting to various VPN secure servers via is taking much longer on my 10MB internet connection/DIR-825  compared to tethering from a blackberry.  I spoke at length to tech support. They claim I need the VPN port numbers from my company to open the bandwidth.  Well, same story it didn't work. I am going to call now and raise hell due to this issue.

The 45 second delay in our situation was caused by a specific situation where my home network mimicked to a certain extend our companies network.

Work network was a private 10.x.x.x home is a 10.0.0.x network. The Home network DNS server was the IP address of the home gateway 10.0.0.10 (in my case). The Anyconnect client delayed DNS lookups by about 15 seconds for each "failed" message sent from the corp DNS servers. (We have multiple domains so a domain search order is present.)

A work around is when connected to the home network point your work laptop to a get DNS from something other than the home gateway IP address. (Like one of the 4.2.2.x well known server addresses out on the internet.)
