Disabling 2.4GHz band; How to?
« on: August 13, 2009, 09:41:10 AM »

Hello, first time reader and poster here.

Until recently everything was fine and was using a DIR-615 router with no disconnects or any trouble. Then my grandma, with whom i live with, decided to get some wireless camera's.  Now because they run on 2.4 G Hz band and are literally under my routers  signal radius — i use the second floor— they overlap. the 615 couldn't handle the overlap, and burnt out. Now no lights shine, and no signal gets through to that router.
So i bought the 825 because it had a dual band.

Hoping to be able to use the 5 G Hz for my laptop. Anyways. On to my question: How can i disable the G Hz band completely. I've tried disabling the 2.4 G Hz band but the wireless camera's signal still seems to be interfering with the router and disconnecting it at random intervals. Someone told me i should remove the SSID but i cant seem to do that, or find out how to do that. The router doesn't overheat, because i got into the habit a long while ago to stand it on its side, so i know that shouldn't be the problem.

I've also tried changing the broadcast channel, but it does not seem to work.

Any help in this would be appreciated.

Rather than turning 2.4 ghz off (which limits your own use) try using the MAC filter.  In the 825 setup click "Advanced" then Network Filter.  Turn on MAC filtering to "allow" computers you've entered addresses for.  Type in the MAC address for your computer(s) and save.  The router will ignore anything except the items you've entered.

As an alternative you can block the cameras from accessing the router in "Access Control."

The MAC (hardware) address of each device using your router can be found under "Setup/Network Settings" (scroll to the bottom of the page).  Or follow the instructions posted here: http://www.wikihow.com/Find-the-MAC-Address-of-Your-Computer

Cheers
