DNS-320L Blue blinking of death
« on: September 05, 2017, 05:19:24 PM »

Ok. I'm having the blue blinking problem with my DNS-320L. Sometimes it don't start, when you power it on it just stays blinking the power light and don't start the hard drivers (that makes a sound and turn on HD lights).

Searching on internet found that it's a normal problem with this NAS.

Found here in this forum info that it's related with the unit temperature.

Based on it I've observed that when I turn it on after a long time it was off, it boots normally, but if I try to restart it after it was on for a couple of hours it goes to blue blinking lights.

So I tested it, I've put a huge fan over the top open of the NAS and after 1 minute of blowing wind inside it boots normally when it is at the blue blinking state.

The NAS work absolutelly normal for days if it is left aways on. The problem only occurs if I try to power it on while it is "hot" for been powered.

So I'm not an a hardware expert, but I think that the system check at the start may be getting some bad readings from a temp sensor or some bug on the threshold of the temperature check.

My question is: can someone just help me disable this check at the startup? Linux is very open and we have some experts here. Or even could Dlink check their code to seek for a bug at the startup code, or better put a protected option to disable this check at the startup. I think it will make me and many more DNS-320L users happy for make our units work normally again.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your DNS? Look at the sticker behind or under the device.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the DNSs web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

What happens if you keep a fan running all the time on the DNS. I recommend trying a USB laptop cooler under the DNS forcing cool air from under the DNS up to the top or you could try pulling cool air from the top to the bottom. I presume forcing cool air form up under should do.

Have you checked the power voltage and amps at the tip of the power plug as well?

Another question you should be asking is 'why is the temperature cutout activating?'  By that I mean is there adequate ventilation or is the NAS jambed in with a lot of other things so there is no air circulation.

From what you describe it looks like restricted air circulation with the drives running hot (drives over 50C will die very quickly).  When you switch the unit off the fan stops running but the heat continues to build up so giving your start up problem.

Make sure there is adequate cool air ventilation to the unit and the problem should resolve itself unless the disks are damaged by overheating.  To be safe you should have a full backup of ALL your data on the NAS.

Could the brand or kind of drives being used elevate heat levels aswell contribute to this issue?

Have you checked the power voltage and amps at the tip of the power plug as well?

Hardware version - A2
Firmware - 1.10 (last one on the Dlink support donwload).
Region - South America (Brazil).

Donīt have the tool to check the power voltage and amps from the power plug, but will take it for a friend and check.

More info: My 320L isnīt new, it is working for 4 or 5 years at last. Use it only to backup my files, no raid set, and two 2TB drivers (1 Seagate, 1 Samsung).

Another question you should be asking is 'why is the temperature cutout activating?'  By that I mean is there adequate ventilation or is the NAS jambed in with a lot of other things so there is no air circulation.

My 320L stay on my working table next to my monitor, with space on all of itīs sides. The operations temps are: System temp 38 to 40 celsius, HD 1 and 2 37 to 41 celsius. Got this info from system info > HD status.

So no overheating here.

I already have all the data backuped on other HD (outside the NAS), first thing I did when it came back from the first blue blinking state over a year ago..

Let us know if you can get the power block tested. Might see if you can find a exact power supply to match and test as see if problem is still present.
