Connecting to DNS-323
« on: December 06, 2007, 02:24:41 PM »

Hi,
Hope someone can help me, when I type in the UNC path into explorer I get prompted for a user name and password, but the user name has ‘dns323\Guest’ and is greyed out. I am unable to enter the user name I have setup within the DNS-323.

The only way I can connect to the device is to map a drive letter and ‘Connect using a different user name’, this is a pain.

I am using Windows XP Pro with all the latest updates, I have turned off ‘Use simple file sharing’ and I have search Google with no luck.

Also to the guys at D-Link, great product seems to work great.....I only have two issue and they are with the firmware.

1. For those of us that live say in South Australia could you start adding the rest of the world to the Time Zones?
2. The password limitation of 6 – 8 characters I thought when out with the dinosaurs, if it is a limitation of the OS your
using as mentioned in a previous post then I guest there is not much that can be done.

As I said it is a great product for a great price, I have had mine for about two weeks setup with two 500 GB WD drives, RAID 1.

Thanks for any help on my problem  ;D

this i think sounds like a windows XP / MC issue

open up my computer

TOOLS > FOLDER OPTIONS > VIEW > scroll ALL THE WAY DOWN > uncheck / check .. Use simple file sharing

should be right after that (i would hope)

Thanks for the response....But if you read my post a little more carefully you will note that in the third paragraph I have already done this.

I am using Windows XP Pro with all the latest updates, I have turned off ‘Use simple file sharing’ and I have search Google with no luck.

I have turn off Use simple file sharing on all my Windows XP Pro computers.

Which firmware are you using? Regardless of that the UN/Password prompt is really a Windows sharing issue for connecting to samba based devices. Is there a reason to not MAP the device like you stated you could do?

I am using firmware version: 1.03
firmware date: 30/03/2007

The reason has nothing to do with mapping or not but every time I restart the computer even if the drive is mapped permanently to a drive letter, I click on the drive and get prompted for a password that I cannot get to work because the user name is greyed out, so I have to disconnect the drive mapping and remap the drive going through the process I mentioned before.

I know this is not a DNS-323 issue, it is a Windows XP issue but I have tried other avenues and have not been able to resolve this.

If this is not appropriate for this forum than let me know and I will take it somewhere else.  ???
Thanks

I believe another work around could be to map the drive with the same username as the Windows XP pc. If the Windows PC username matches the devices username(set one up in user management with the same name) it should logon using the windows login name. Try this method and let me know if it fixes the reboot issue you are having.

This mite work but I am not using profile and the computers are used by the hole family so the point of making a secure area on the DNS-323 (one of the reasons for going with a NAS box) would go out the window.
also I use passwords longer than 8 character and the DNS-323 can not.

The point of this post for me is to resolve the issue of the grayed out field when connecting to the NAS as I can work around the problem by reconnecting to the NAS each time I restart the computer as I am the only one accessing the secure area.

So if anyone can tell me how to get the connect to form to ungray the user name field I would love to here from you.

Thanks for all the responses, I am hoping I have not offended anyone as I am just getting bothered that I haven't found a solution yet.

Kind Regards

how about just creating a batch script that has that username / password information already stored (net use .. with out the /p variable).

advantage: will not connect driver share when other users have just logged into your XP box
advantage: will connect you when you run the batch script as you know where it is located

disadvantage: does not solve your grey box problem
disadvantage: must create & use batch script when necessary

What you can also do is create a user on the DNS-323 and set the permissions for it then when you use the windows to map the drive click on connect as different user and use the username you set and password and see if it maps out.

As you can see from my first post here this is how I am mapping the drive, I have to go into TOOL > MAP DRIVE and select Connect using a different user name and as I mentioned in the first post this is a pain and I should not have to go to these lengths.
