Nothing but problems...
« on: August 18, 2009, 04:35:05 PM »

Okay, so I just moved into my new place and am in desperate need of help/advice...

I have a DIR-825 and a Linksys WUSB600N USB adapter on my desktop...Now the router and desktop are about 25-30 feet away and I get "very low" connection signal. Is that supposed to be like that or is there a setting that needs to be changed? It's extremely annoying because I'm also having issues with the 2.4ghz portion of the router as well... I notice on my notebook which has built in wifi adapter, that my "G" connection randomly resets (internet connection drops and reconnects really fast). I thought maybe it was my notebook, but I changed my desktop connection to the "G" connection with the Linksys USB adapter and I get a "good signal connection" BUT it also dropped after a few minutes and reconnected...

What is going on? Any suggestions? I have the latest firmware for the DIR-825 router. Ontop of this, my other problem is, when I goto the "STATUS" tab on the dlink router setup page and then click on "wireless" on the left, it shows my computer with the Linksys adapter as being connected with "a" connection and not "n". Please, anybody please help me!!

Thank you!!

Which DIR-825 hardware version?

Are you using the Windows Zero Config client with the Linksys USB adapter?  If so, it often reports incorrect signal strength.  How is your throughput?  Do a speed test at www.speedtest.net or send files to another PC in your LAN.

Your "a" client will connect using "n" if its a "draft n" client and you have both the router and client configured correctly.

How do I determine which DIR-825 hardware version I have?

I am using Windows Zergo Config for the Linksys USB adapter...I didn't care much with the utility that Linksys provides. Even when I did use Linksys' utility, it showed low connection signal as well.

I notice while downloading torrents, I can get up to 1.8mbps download speed on the A connection, but on the G connection, I've seen it go up to about 1.2mbps, but then the connection drops and reconnects.

My next question would be, HOW do I configure what ever it is I need to configure to have my Linksys adapter connect as an "N" connection and not an "A"?

Flip it over.  Will say on the bottom on a small decal.  Look for A1 or B1.  If you have B1 make sure V2.02NA is loaded.  Obtain from ftp.dlink.com.  If its A1 be careful before upgrading firmware.  Seems that the consensus says to stay with the original firmware for now.  You may want to poke around these forums and look for comments on the A1 version.

Which Linksys adapter are you using?  Visit Linksys's website and get the latest driver for it.  Try again using the Linksys connection util instead of Zero Config.

Login to your DIR-825 and click the SETUP > WIRELESS > MANUAL SETUP.  Check to make sure 5Ghz is set for N or N and A.  You can also set the channel width to Auto 20/40.

In your Linksys adapter make sure it is setup for N.  Don't know where that is, since I'm not familiar with the Linksys util.  You may have to look in the adapter properties in Device manager.

The version I have for my router is the A1 - Problem is that you mentioned on holding off to updating the firmware, but I did that already prior to me posting in the forums...

The Linksys adapter is the WUSB600N. Prior also to posting on the forum, I downloaded the latest driver and installed on the desktop and have tried the windows zergo config as well as the Linksys software they provide. And both show "low signal strength".

I also had it already set under SETUP > WIRELESS > MANUAL SETUP for "N ONLY". I do not know what else to do...Do you suggest in me exchanging the Linksys adapters? I noticed the last couple days that my G connection has not been restarting/resetting like it had been so I think I may have fixed that issue...Now I'm just stuck on why I'm getting low signal connection with the N connection and why in my router it shows that desktop as being connected as A and not N...

I would not worry too much about the low signal strength metering on the client and in the DIR-825.  This is often highly inaccurate.  Sometimes when the router and client are of the same chipset series, Atheros 9001 or 9002, in the case of the DIR-825 then you may get better signal strength reporting.

As far as your N issue is concerned, I would try an Atheros 9001 or 9002 based N adapter.  The Dlink DWA160 A is Atheros.  The B version is Ralink.  Not sure why they switched.  Maybe they will re-release an Atheros USB stick.  Anyway, I would think either would work.  It would be pretty bad if Dlink didn't make sure their USB N adapters worked with their routers.

Its not necessarily that your Linksys adapter or the router are bad.  Interoperability issues exist, especially in wireless products.  All of the 802.11 standards are designed to eliminate interop issues, but in the real world thats never the case.

I too have a WUSB600N (version 1) adapter.  The majority of the problems are with the Linksys drivers and their Linksys Network Monitor software.  They are extremely "buggy!!!"

Head over to Linksys Support Community forums and look at how to use the Ralink rt2870 drivers.  At least these driver and User Interface "works."
