I need your opinion please read inside...........
« on: August 21, 2009, 12:11:21 PM »

I currently have a DIR-655 A3 with the 1.32 NA firmware. I am having same problems as everone else.
The 1.10 firmware ran perfect! I am so mad I upgraded to the 1.3xx now I am stuck.

I am contimplating getting a DIR-655 A4 with 1.21 firmware (new purchase). Am I safe to assume I can then drop back to 1.10? Do you think this is a waste of money????? (is my real question) Do you think the 1.3xx firmware will ever be corrected and I should just hold onto the A3 with 1.32NA?????

   Please share your comments....

Thanks

Really! So and A4 unit lowest it goes is 1.20?
In your opinion is the 1.2xx firmware much better then the 1.3xx and do you
think Dlink will ever straighten out the 1.3xx firmware?

Thanks

My DIR-655 A3 works fine with all the firmware versions i've installed until now (1.21EU, 1.30NA, 1.32NA)

So, i can't give you a opinion, but i hope they create a way to downgrade 1.3x NA . I want to install the 1.3x EU, to get back my router warranty   :P

A1/A2 FW 1.32NA runs fine except for Shareport and issues with DNS Relay. Just disable DNS Relay and don't use Shreport.

My A2 doesn't even have the Shareport and DNS issues...

I don't have any problems with DNS Relay either but many have disabled it even with the new fw 1.32 release. Shareport is a good Idea but having to install software to make it functional turns me away. It would have been nice if it was embedded in the router making it PnP.

Your might not be, but if you read this sub forum and the 825 sub forum along with dslreports, the number of people reporting freezing and shareport issues is growing and growing with both these models.

If the software/driver or the firmware is crappy, I really wonder why I don't suffer from these issues. I did have some issues with the 1.14 Shareport software, but my router (8 devices attached) is without problems. No wireless issues, reconnects, reboots or failing Shareport software (under Vista and W7 RC & RTM). As an IT pro I knwo for a fact that if firmware of software is bust, all suffer from this, no exeptions. So I wonder what the cause of all the issues is...

Com-on Demonized you know very well where the problem is, end users. Your going to have a percentage of people that think they know how to configure a router or computer but the truth is they are their own worst enemy.

A+ for speaking out my private thoughts. Although they will kill you for this  ;)

And just because someone doesn't run into an issue, doesn't mean there isn't an issue.  If that were the case, why would my company employ 20 people to just work in sustaining?  It's because customers run into issues all the time.  Alot of the time, customers hit issues that no one has ever had.

My 655 ran for months fine on 1.11.  I can't keep it up more than 3-4 days in 1.32.  I have a 825 running 1.01 firmware that can run for weeks with no issues. I also get constant Remote Desktop disconnects when I remote desktop into work on the 655 (anywhere from 10-20 during the day) when I had no issues before.  Maybe about 15 times I have used my 825, and I haven't had one disconnect.

So I am sorry that I am not IT pro like you, but I am a software engineer who knows a little thing about software/coding, working for a company whose software sells for about a million dollars.  Back in the day I even worked in network operations for an internet content provider working with millions of dollars worth of networking equipment.

So we can piss back and forth about who knows more about this stuff, but so far the only argument you seem to have is that you don't run into the issue so there must not be any.  Sometimes that works, but in this case it doesn't.

I also seem to remember that you didn't have any DNS slowdown issue in 1.21, correct?  Because I am kind of wondering why d-link would release 1.22B05 to fix it if there wasn't a bug.

True. It suggest that there a more factors involved. Like overall configuration of network and/or client system (the black box called Windows that has a mind of his own). This is supported by Dlink when they say that even on RMÁ-ed devices they cannot reproduce the errors reported. As a software engineer that must telll you something. Some claimed that the Shareport software was a bunch of bad code. When asked for the details: no answer.

So solely blaming the firmware of software for the issues is simply too easy.

And you are right about the DNS slowdown. I did not suffer from that either.

Right, so you didn't have the dns slowdown issue, yet dlink released a firmware specifically for it.  So since you didn't have an issue, was the firmware just a placebo?

Don't you find it strange that the firmware version released to fix the slowdown issue with "DNS Relay" was the first version to have the crashing problem with "DNS Relay"?  Don't you find it strange that users are reporting the same issue on the 825?

The fact that D-link can't reproduce this issue doesn't really tell me anything.  Sometimes customers run into issues that we have a hard time reproducing.  But just because it can't be reproduced doesn't mean there isn't a bug in the code.  It sometimes means there is something we are overlooking in our testing, or issues that can only be hit during the real world use of our software.

To the OP of this thread,  If you can find an 825 running 1.01 its a great router.  I tried the Linksys 610n and didn't really like it.  The DIR-825 is almost the same as the 655 except its dual band.  I have a D-link PCIe wireless n card in my desktop which unfortunately doesn't have 5Ghz but my macbook has it.  5Ghz is nice because its not as crowded but the range is not as good.

Macworth,

The local store does have the 825 with 1.01. Is this another case where they have
firmware updates that cannot be rolled back?
