Slow wifi download Speeds
« on: August 22, 2009, 03:04:14 PM »

So I obviously have a DIR-655 router that I use at home. I've just recently ran into an issue with the wifi download speeds.

I use a MacBook Pro that also runs Windows 7. For some odd reason, when running Windows 7 I have a significantly slow wifi speed. According to 2wire.com's speed meter test it's usually at <1mbps. While using MAC OSX the wifi speeds are where they should be... about 16mbps.

When both OSes are connected via LAN cable the speeds have no issue.

I thought that maybe Windows 7 and a driver maybe the issue, but I noticed that whenever I'm on another wifi network I'm able to get higher speeds... so I think something maybe mis-configured on my router.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks tons!

If you don't give an overview of your router settings it will take about three pages of replies. So help the members out with some info.

Not sure what wireless cards you have but limit your channels to those cards. example: G,N
Also Channel Width : 40MHz, change to 20.

Are you running a DHCP Reservations List?

What are you talking about? If I put 20Mhz, the rates drop to 50's Mbps...Channel width must be 20/40Mhz.

Hi,

I am a little confused about Jason's reply.....  Maybe I am brain farting here but, How does one limit certain channels to certain cards/adapters ?  And also, How would using DHCP reservations affect wireless speeds ?

I have a number of wireless clients here all usign DHCP reservations, and as far as I know, there is no impact on wireless speed using a DHCP IP reservation.  But if you have some information that I am unaware of, can you share it with us ?  I for one would certainly appreciate it.

I was making suggestions to "RomBot", if this affects you in a negitive way then change it back. So many different config's out there.

Well depending on your environment, maybe your neighbors are on the same channel and cause interference and affects your connection and throughput.
My thoughts on DHCP reservations is if your computers MAC's and lan addy's are in the reservation list then there is no searching or discovery for the router to handle.
