Did you try setting up without the CD?

I am about to.

Quote
I cannot find the software. It is not on our FTP site, or in my archives. I do not see it in the global database.

Well, it's somewhere! I can't believe that each and every CD that was stamped has gone to the great bitbucket in the sky.

Maybe after all is said and done I'll buy one on fleabay.

Quote
The CD will not work with Windows 10.

No offense, but I don't always believe that (nor do I believe that even if true, it can't be made to run. In one of my earlier lives I built computers, did "consulting" for gov't offices (hardware and software -- specialized in the impossible, i.e., getting a serial printer to work on a machine for which it was "impossible" (in this case by stealing a handshake line and coercing it into serving a role for which it was never intended) and so forth), and then, after my body was ruined by a doped up driver, made some "easy money" writing book/magazine articles on software development (Que, Fawcette, etc., was at one point a Contributing Editor for Visual Studio Magazine -- don't bother looking me up, I was using my real life name back then).

[[PS: as long as I'm honking my own horn, some of my work was referenced in the Visual Studio help files. VS 5 or 6, can't remember which, it's been a while. I found out when a friend mentioned it to me while we were "doing lunch."]]

Manual - start with page 13 - ftp://FTP2.DLINK.COM/PRODUCTS/DIR-835/REVA/DIR-835_MANUAL_1.00_EN.PDF

I downloaded (and parsed) the manual (and everything else I could find, including the file that wasn't shown on the "consumer" tab of the download page) before I posted anything here.

The CD basically does the same thing.

I am assuming it also hotwires my OS to allow me to enter "dlinkrouter" as a URL...

You can type "dlinkrouter.local." into the address bar.

Is your computer in a LAN port on the dlink router? If yes, then open a browser and type "dlinkrouter.local.".

Please answer my questions. We are trying to help but you are not answering if you can connect and run the wizard.

Hallelujah! Finally something I can use! (Sorry that I am unable to use "Just enter the IP, you idiot!" style "help.")

Yes, my machine is cabled into the current dying router, and will be plugged into this one in just a few minutes.

Nope.

I am now officially frustrated (I much preferred my previous state of being officially perturbed.)

I tried everything -- "by the book" -- I tried letting the router supply my PC's IP. I tried "hard"-setting my IP to one that should have worked. No matter what I tried, I was unable to connect to the router.

I finally went and looked at the Ethernet adapter's icon (in "Network Settings") -- it said "Network Cable Unplugged" no matter what I did (and yes, I did check the power plug -- and, the power-on LED.

So... am I missing something pathetically obvious? Or is this item DOA?

PS: I was trying to access via IP, not by name.

PPS: I also sat here watching the icon as I had my son move the Ethernet cable through all of the ports. The message never changed until he plugged it back into the old router.

Try different PC and swap out lan cables?
Ensure your PCs networking is setup auto obtain IP addressing?

What OS platform are you using? Windows or Mac?
With just a PC and the 835, the PC should get an IP address with out the 835 connected to any modem or other router. Factory reset the 835 with the PC connected to the LAN port. Press in the reset button in back for 10 seconds. Should get an IP address of 192.168.0.something on the PC.

Can a wireless device connect to the default wireless SSID after the reset?

The PC and cable are fine. Want proof? How about this post, sent from the PC over that cable (to the old router).

As I said, I tried dynamic IP supplied by the router, I tried manual IP -- and then I saw that the problem was at a much lower level, i.e., the router was invisible to the PC at a hardware level.

Same concept as trying to recover files from a storage device which cannot be seen by the computer (ran into that nightmare only once (recently), when the SD card in my Sony Reader went flat dead.

No recovery software could do a bloody thing, since the machine could not detect a card present. (Big difference between an fsck'd up file system and a DEAD device!) (In the Days of Yore (MFM/RLL days, with "dead reckoning" (stepper motor) head positioning, this was sadly not that uncommon an experience.)

I tried the reset for (over) ten seconds. The power LED cycled when I was done. I powered down/up for good measure.

No joy. (This was all before my desperation post above.)

Will see if a wifi device can see it, brb...

Can he Connect to it using the default PW?

Sounds like the LAN ports on the 835 are probably dead. This was a known issue with this model and it's DAP-1533 unit. D-Link used composite heat sink tabs in these units in stead of better metallic ones. I did a mod on mine and kept it running to help prevent the LAN ports and other things from dying.
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=56166.0

I recommend that you return the unit and get into a newer generation router anyways. The 835 isn't developed on any more thus it doesn't cover some of the current wifi bugs and such that are now protected by newer generation routers. The DIR-878 would be something you should check out. Good router. Gave mine to a family member in there new home.

Here's a screencap of what he got on my wife's (Mac) laptop.

Well, scrap that idea. Doesn't seem to be any way to insert an image (that isn't on a website).

If there's some Seekrit method for uploading an image, let me know and I'll post it. Otherwise, this will have to suffice: It was a setup screen, which at the top says "WELCOME TO THE D-LINK SETUP WIZARD" (Followed by, "This wizard will guide you through a step-by-step blah blah blah..."

Looks like dead hardware. I hate this crap -- mostly because of all the work I put into finding out what I did wrong, when it finally turns out I didn't do anything wrong.

Ya, sorry about that. Some refurbs not not fully or correctly tested before they get repackaged and re-sold. Just turning on a device doesn't mean it works.

Look in to the DIR-878. I picked on up for cheap on Amazon earlier this year.

Thx, here ya go (pointless, I know...)

PS: That site gave me a URL that was sans filename. I had to right-click on the image, get image properties, and copy the full URL (with filename after the dir name).

Thats the setup wizard, same as what used to be on CDs.

Send it back and let the seller know the LAN ports are dead in back. The unit is EOL so probably chuck it in the trash since it's way out of warranty and no longer supported by D-Link.  :-\

Give the DIR-878 or 882 a try. Good Luck.

Thanks. It's now out of my hands. I gathered up all the bits (router, antennae, little bitty bag with wall-mounting screws and a set of spare feet[???] and wall-wart), and handed it all off to my wife. (SWMBO handles "logistics" in this madhouse.)

PS: Just to make my life sublime, my son screeches "Let's drive to Muskegon and buy a router!" to which I reply that we need to wait to see if they are going to give us a refund, or insist on replacing it with an identical unit.

He then repeats his screech.

Seven decades I endure this lunatic planet, and now I get to endure an "autism spectrum" teenager.

At least Michigan made The Evil Weed legal. Now where did I put that stuff?
