Multiple DNS-321 devices - mirror drives
« on: August 24, 2009, 10:50:07 AM »

Hi All,

I have purchased 2 DNS-321 devices. Each device has a 1 1TB drive.  My plan is to purchase about 12 or 13 more of these, along with 12 or 13 1 TB hard drive to go in them.

I have 1 completely configured and all data/users/groups set exactly how I want them.  What would be the easiest way to setup 12 or 13 more of these devices so that they are all identically the same?

Save the configuration file from the TOOLS menu, make sure all units are running the same firmware and upload the config file to each unit.

Thanks for the reply.

I have actually already done this - and this is a help, but this will not create the shares - they must be created manually on every NAS box.  The conf file only deals with the settings, ip info, and users & groups. My main objective is the data more then anything.  Could each drive be duplicated somehow, by means of Linux's dd or a Windows utility first?  or is there an easier way to do this?

Can Ghost be used to clone the drives before they are put into the DNS-321?

Probably, after all it's just ext2.

I don't know how sensitive the admins on the board here are to this, so feel free to delete if this crosses a line... If you are not linux savvy, please ignore the following!  You could install fun_plug (google it), which gives you console access (and a lot more).  You can then just copy /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, /etc/group and /etc/ftp_tbl (if you have ftp perms setup). You can grep for one of usernames and group names in /etc to make sure you get all the necessary files.

Thanks for the reply nickOfTime.

I'm currently in the process of ghosting the drive - all going good.

I've been reading up on the fun_plug, and I have it downloaded.  Once the ghosting is complete, I intend on install this and try it out.

Thanks!

I'd Ghost one and try it before doing all of them. :D
