RAID-1 and Encrypted Partition

Hello,

This post is a follow up to my previous topic[1].

I have successfully cross-compiled libdevmapper, cryptsetup et al. I have tested these tools by creating a encrypted filesystem in a file (loopback).

Does anyone have any advice on how I should go about creating the encrypted partition (true partition - not a file)? Here is what I am thinking:

Take the drive in slot2 out of the dns-323. Then, partition the drive in slot1 into two: 1GB and ~740GB. The 1GB would be ext2/ext3 (what ever is default on the dns-323) and would contain fun-plug and the cross-compiled cryptsetup (et al.). I would then setup the second partition to be fully encrypted using luksFormat (aes-cdc-essiv:sha256 I think).

Once I have the dns-323 all configured, I would then reinsert the drive (the one I initially took out) into slot2.

At this point I am hoping that the RAID-1 mechanism of the dns-323 will resync the drive in slot1 onto the drive in slot2.

Will the above work? I've read in various places that the resync'ing may not work and in fact could sync the drive in slot2 onto the drive in slot1 (thus loosing all my effort).

The drives I have right now don't have anything on them other then FFP and cryptsetup (et al.). Plus I have a backup of those on my desktop (which I will need when I repartition the slot1 drive into two). So, I'm not worried about messing up the drive contents or loosing the drive contents. I just would rather not loose the contents after I have configured the drives.

Any thoughts or experience with fdisking the drives would be greatly appreciated. If I repartition the drive does the dns-323 web configuration break?

I hate to be the one to say it... but...

You won't find help on this in this forum.  Look elsewhere.  D-Link will never officially sanction the modification of their product in these forums. 

If encryption is something you really want, I'd buy an older pc and put linux on it and have at it.

Oh, so topics relating to modding the DNS-323 are not allowed here? I didn't know that.
