Computer Constantly Loses Connection
« on: August 28, 2009, 06:50:39 AM »

I just upgraded my computer to Windows Vista 64 home premium, and now my computer constantly drops the internet connection.

I am using a DWA-130 USB Adapter, and a DIR-655 router. It worked fine with WinXP, and I have other devices connected to the network with no issues. But now, about every 5 minutes, it drops the internet connection, and says I have limited or no connectivity.

Signal strength looks good, at 85% plus.

It is really annoying as it is impossible to download anything of a decent size without the connection being interrupted.  It stays connected to the wireless network, but loses internet. Any advice?

I'm Having The Same Problem
« Reply #1 on: August 28, 2009, 01:00:52 PM »

I have the same problem and I am using XP. I've tried 3 different computers with 3 different wireless adapters and NONE of them will maintain a consistent connection even if they are in the same room with nothing blocking the signal.

I've asked Dlink support for help but have had no help.

I've upgraded the firmware on the router several times as they are released but none of them have helped the problem. I've tried moving the router around the room, but that didn't help either.

So if anybody has any suggestions, I would appreciate it.

P.S. It is interesting to see that the spell checker on this forum doesn't recognize the word dlink.

Hi,

It would seem the first two posts do not decribe the same issue....  just a similiar symptom.  I would suggest maybe to the OP to go into his network settings and disable/uninstall the IPv6 protocol item....it "might" be overloading the connection...a lot of places don't even support IPv6 yet....at least far as I've read....others may disagree...

If the same device worked on the same PC under XP....if its not an IPv6 issue, then it is likely a driver thing....  Which for Win7 may simply take a while to work thru driver re-writes by the developers.

Do you run wireless encryption ?  if so...turn it off and retest the adapter's stability....it shouldn't affect the adapter...but this is WIndows after all....  definitely use wireless encryption under most settings....

Let us know...

Well,  I am having the same issue with my setup... DIR-655 Router and an office with 10, DWA-130s.
They are all running Win XP.

I tried different settings.. 20 and 20/40 Channel width... I tried WAP2 Only with AES encryption.. (suggested by DLINK support).  I tried 802N only.

The dropped connection is random among the 10 machines.. some do it others don't.. then it will change which computers will do it.. some will disc-connect every 20 seconds.. others its every half hour or so.

Since they weren't going down all the same time, I kind of ruled out the router.  (Mostly)

The final thing I did to get the office stable was to go to 802G ONLY... no N speeds.

They are all now stable... but I have a problem buying N equipment and only being able to run G speed.

No resolution from Dlink yet... still waiting.

I am a retired IT manager and use the 655 at home with absolutely no problems.  Your post contains little or no diagnostically useful information so I would simply suggest that you try the following:

Do not use the dlink program to manage the connection, use the Microsoft.  The dlink utility sucks.
Choose your own channel, not auto, especially if your wireless is far from the router.  You may have another wireless user close to your workstation but far from the router so AUTO would choose the wrong channel.
If any of your stations are old, turn on Multicasting as well as Unicasting.
Establish and use DHCP reservations.

Hi,

Marmo...  What would Multicast and Unicast do that having them off would not do ?  Just curious of your thoughts...

Hello Sammydad,

I believe that just junking the dlink connection manager alone will fix the problem.  The other things were just to maintain a general robustness of the connection.  Possibly, connections would not be dropped if some "chatter" was detected on the network.  If you have printers and other things taking up IP Addresses (not USB) on the network as I do, Multicasting seems to allow for efficient levels of chatter but not individual announcements clogging the system as much.  Multicasting, in general, is better for legacy items, and creates less amounts of traffic on older networks that prefer it.

Hope this helps.

That statement is only true if the device(s) in question are multicast enabled devices like IP Cameras or IPTV.
I doubt very seriously if it will effect the stablility of his connection. I can say that the reasons for the disconnects will most defently be in the logs of the router.

Please post your logs.

Lycan,

Although everything you say is perfectly true, I have come at his problem from a different angle.  In short, his router worked fine until he changed his workstation.  D-Link makes a fine, stable router, however the "Connection Manager" on his workstation is junk.  We both know that.  I could duplicate his circumstance immediately just by allowing my D-Link workstation software to load.  Best thing to do is to inactivate it using msconfig or the like.
