Convert DIR-655 into Wireless Range Extender
« on: July 18, 2021, 01:08:10 AM »

Hello all,

New member here.   I'm hoping you can lead me to the right board so I can get my questions answered.  I did scan your long list of postings but didn't find anything that related to my immediate problem.  This is where I need your help.

Task:
My task is to extend the range of my in-law's home wi-fi router so I can pick up its signal in my 3rd floor apartment located some 500 feet away.  The distance is more or less in a straight line over farms and through a few trees. I have a high-gain antenna at the apartment that should compensate for any foliage attenuation.  The antenna is directly hooked to a USB wi-fi adapter and the combination should be able to pipe the signal directly into my laptop.  I also have an old Dlink DIR-655 router that has worked well for more than 10 years.  I wish to configure the router as a wi-fi extender so it can extend the range of my in-laws router in my direction and allow me to pick up the signal in my apartment.

Step 1:  Access 655's config screens so it can be reconfigured as a wi-fi extender.
Problem:  I can't access the 655's config screens while the house router is online.  For these initial steps my laptop is connected to the house router located just a few feet away via wi-fi signal.  The 655 is connected to the laptop as well but via ethernet cable.  If I disconnect said cable the laptop connects immediately to the internet allowing me to refer to the online videos (and this forum) that I am using for guidance.  There is no connection between the two routers so they should not be interfering with each other, but yet they are.

The 655 has been 30-30-30 reset.  I saved its configuration so I can restore it to its former use if/when that becomes necessary.  Really, though, all I need it to do right now is become a wi-fi extender.  I have a fair idea how to do that -- I just need to get to Step 1 first.

Can you assist me here?

Many thanks!

Something that is not supported on the DIR-655.
Bridge Mode vs Relay vs Access Point (AP) / Routers vs Dedicated Access Points (AP)

You can configure AP mode though:
