Setting Up a Network Printer
« on: December 13, 2007, 02:17:07 PM »

Hello,
I'm setting up a Home Network. I have 4 computers (2 x XP Home, 1 Vista Ultimate 32bit, and 1 Vista Ultimate 64bit), an Ethernet ready Printer and a USB Printer. One of the XP Home computers is my Wireless Laptop. My Router is D-Link DIR-655 and my Laptop Adapter is D-Link DWA-652. I also have a Windows Home Server connected to the Router.
My question is how do I connect my 2 printers to my network?
Do I need to get a Print Server? I'd rather have the 2 printers on the net directly rather than connected directly to any computer.
If I need a Print Server, which D-Link product will fix me up?
Thanks for any help.

A print server would be a good idea.  The DPR-1260 has 4 USB ports for up to 4 printers and will support multi-function printers (printing and scanning)

Check this link for more information:

Hello,
an Ethernet ready Printer and a USB Printer.
My question is how do I connect my 2 printers to my network?

You may want to check the manufacture of the "Ethernet Ready" Printer and get the module for that printer.
On the USB printer, You can try the DPR-1260 if you printer is in its compatiblity list.

The Ethernet ready printer should be able to just connect right to the DIR-655, as it most likely has a built-in print server already.

Thanks to all for your advice and recommendations !
I probably need to add a Switch to my Router as I have no more Network Ports left; then, I'll look into a Print Server I can plug into the Switch. It should have at least one USB Connection. I don't believe I will need for the Server to be Wireless.
Any additional suggestions are most welcome.
Thanks again,
Igneous

You might want to look at a USB server instead of a print server.  I have the Keyspan US-4A USB server, which plugs into my router.  I can plug any USB device into it, and access those devices from any computer that has the server software installed.  Most importantly, you have access to the printer's monitoring software (like the Canon software that gives ink status, etc).  Print servers are one way devices, so you won't get any of the status information.
