DNS-323 Recomended HD's and Partioning
« on: August 29, 2009, 06:46:14 PM »

Sorry up front for the long list of questions, but can any current DNS-323 users help me get setup?

I am buying a DNS-323 and after reviewing several forums getting a little confused about all the chatter of firmware and other issues with Hard drives >1TB. It seams there are more complaints for The Seagate 1.5TB than the WD Caviar Green 1.5TB drive. I have both drives in other PC's and they both work fine. Are the reported problems due to the DNS firmware? If you buy a DNS-323 does it ship with v1.7? Can you easily upgrade the Firmware on the DNS before installing the Hard drives?

Is there any list from D-Link of drives that are reccomended or not compatable?

On another point, one of the drawbacks I have heard of the DNS series is that it runs Linux OS and cannot format NFTS or FAT32 drives. So if you put a drive that is already formated with Windows XP as NFTS, will it work, or will it reformat and destroy the Data on it? Do you have to use virgin drives? Also can you partition the drives with Windows XP or do you need special software. I use Partition magic but it only works with FAT32 or NFTS and won't format any drive over 750GB's.
Thanks All

Hi

I can't help you with the question regarding hard drives > 1TB, but I do know Dlink fix and support larger hard drives in newer firmware revisions. Your other questions are answered on the support page of the DNS-323 on the Dlink website.

I don't think anyone can be sure which firmware you will get installed when you buy a DNS-323, I would imagine it depends on how long the product has been in stock etc. In any case, it is very easy to upgrade the firmware. The latest firmware and instructions for installing it are available with a list of tested compatible hard drives on the website.

The DNS-323 can not use hard drives with FAT/NTFS partitions. Drives will be re-partitioned and re-formatted as EXT2 or EXT3 (next firmware) file system which is native to Linux. Windows will let you read and write to them through the network. If you directly connect them to your PC, you can get read and write access to them in Windows with a EXT2/3 driver.

I have a DNS-323, upgraded with the 1.7 (latest) firmware. When I access the web configuration, the first thing I see is a screen to select a RAID level, then choose if I want Auto-rebuild or not. I select RAID-1 with Auto-rebuild. Then the format screen appears with the percentage count. So far so good. Unfortunately it stops at 94% and then it sits there for ever. Basically, it hangs. Everything else on the DNS-323 works as expected, except for the most important thing, its storage system. My HDs are two Seagate ST315005N1A1AS-RK (S/N: 9VS2C4ZK, PN: 9JB1AS-571). I' ve tried this 3 times so far but it never completes, always gets stuck at 94%. So, is there any hope or am I looking at $500 down the drain? Any suggestions, please? Anybody?

I have a DNS-321 with a pair of Seagate 1.5TB drives in it and a DNS-323 with a pair of Samsung 1.5 TB drives, all running RAID-1.  So far both boxes have had no issues with the drives.

My only issue is, especially with the higher power Seagate drives, I had to increase the intake vent size to allow decent cooling.  Basically, there was no intake vents before my mods.

I work recommend checking the firmware on the Hard drives making sure they are up to date. the old firmware had known issue and it would cause this as a symptom as well.

Sorry for the delayed response. The DNS-323 has been upgraded with the latest 1.07 firmware. The HDs are brand new, purchased in a sealed box and the model is on the D-Link compatibility list, so I think I'm OK with that as well. I always had excellent result with Seagate HDs before. I run this box with two 750GB for over 3 years with zero(0) problems. I can't afford not have this NAS operational for long, I am a photographer and need the storage. Do you recommend going back to a previous firmware? But in this case it won't support the 1.5GB drives, am I right?

Any help is highly appreciated, thank you!

Often times, HDD's have been in the distribution channels for extended periods of time before they make it to their new home - you. :)

So, unless the HDD's were shipped directly from Seagate 10 minutes before you read this post; check the firmware revisions of the HDD's.

Cheers,
