Hey all,

I have a new DIR 615 and I've been struggling with it. It started out with slow speeds, but after updating the firmware of both the router and my 5100 AGN card and getting help from support tweaking the settings, it was running better.

At that point the wireless was getting me about 8-10 Mbps (wired was getting me 12 Mbps for comparison). The wireless is occasionally, but much too frequently, going very slow.

More often that not, when it's working well, it's getting 4-6 Mbps. Now it's getting 300-600 Kbps and has been for several hours.

I have it set to:

802.11n only
Auto Channel Scan not enabled
2.462 Ghz - CH11
Auto 20/40 Mhz
WPA Personal
Auto WPA or WPA2
AES
Update Interval: 3600s

Anyone have any ideas?  It's hard to test sometimes because it'll pop back to working well at just the right time and then a day later, same settings, it's back to its old tricks -which is what happened when I called support.  That, or these settings changes temporarily kick it into working somehow.  I don't understand the magic, I just follow the advice. 

Anyway, the return policy ends Wednesday - would I just be better off with a 655?

Not sure, but standard cable modems etc only admit 15mb/s download 5mb/s upload. Fios offers 25/15. So in all honesty those numbers seem fine to me. Yes it is possible to get better numbers on your wireless, but thats all depending whats going on with your ISP and router. I have Cox Cable. They only support 4 IP addresses. So my normal connecting sources is My main PC, My roommates PC, and my video game system ,since all video game systems take 2 IP addresses. If your running 2 or even more devices on the same router, Expect low Download/Upload speeds, especially on WLAN hook ups. It's like sharing 15MB Download/Upload. I honestly wish I had FIOS, mainly because Cox Cable has very iffy connection speeds. My PC which is connected through LAN, only gets 1.5mb/s downloads on the majority of downloads. My buddies got FIOS and that same download is about 3mb/s-3.5mb/s.

I'm fine with 4-6 Mbps, but 300 Kbps seems quite slow.  When it gets like that, browsing the web slows down and I'm waiting an appreciable longer time for websites to load.

Right now, the wireless is not being shared between two computers, but it will be in a week or two.  My girlfriend and I are planning to do some online gaming together and I'm worried that if it drops down to the 300-600 Kbps range with just one computer now, that won't really be possible.

It also seems that when the router gets like that and I do a ping to the router, I get 25% packet loss.  So, my main question is, should I worry about continuing to tweak this router, or should I upgrade to a better one?

If your gaming you may want to. I personally always keep my Gaming rigs connected through LAN or just direct connection. From my experience, I ussually get .3-1.3 mb in download speeds. When I play my online games such as WoW, Guild Wars, WAR, and soon to be AION I have a ping near 100 which is fine. My framerates don't suck in places like Dalaran, and I barely lag. This is with the low speed Cox Cable. So yeah I hope that helps.

I have been experiencing similar issues. I have had this router for several months and have lived with the random signal drops. I finally just upgraded the to the latest firmware and the signal has been really good. However, I have not been able to load certain web pages like youtube. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I don't have a high skill level when it comes to these things. I know enough to be dangerous but have managed to set up a secure home network for up to 5 computers (including a handheld). I have manually set the IP's on all computers and the router.
