Disconnecting like crazy
« on: September 03, 2009, 07:38:52 AM »

Hey guys, my router disconnects alot, every 10 minutes to 1 hour.. I had my cable company come out three times and they all said the the router was the problem, even tried myself without the router and it was not the problem. Anyways the router isn't locking up, or resetting itself, it just stops giving my computers internet. I end up power cycling it to make it work again.

I have a vista computer, xp media center, and an xbox on my network. Also the f/w is 1.15, router is A1. Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix this?

Hi, I have a similar experience.
My connection kept reseting so I upgraded to the latest firmware, 1.21NA.

With the 1.21NA firmware, the DGL-4500 resets often. So I went back to a Linksys WRT54G2 router I have.

I'll try the DGL-4500 again after the next firmware revision.

Don't upgrade your firmware.

Don't upgrade your firmware.

Exactly!  Out of the many firmware revisons between 1.02 and 1.16 beta 3, you'll easily find one of those that works 100 times better than the 1.2x.  None of the firmwares are even close to perfect and bug free but the 1.2x are by far the absolute worse and you can't roll back once you've flashed to them.

I have a new saying for those who've flashed past 1.2x and it goes like this.  Once you flash it you'll wanna smash it.  1.2x trashed an otherwise decent consumer grade router.  BTW the new netgear wndr3700 is finally available.

Actually it has been out a little over a two weeks now, got one last week. I would give this one a few before getting it (somethings are not fully working as of the latest f/w). It works MUCH better than the current dgl-4500 A1 with f/w 1.21 I have. But then again I also had a dgl-4500 that worked much better than the current dgl-4500 I have.

I have newest firmware and i have not had any problems let alone any disconnecting issues. If there is problems with the firmware and I'm sure there is they will fix it and hopefully soon. As for a few things you could do:

1. Make sure the router is not on any devices such as a speaker or tv. If so move it to a different location else the router will always be unreliable with any firmware you have.

2. If you don't download, game, and voip all at the same time i would just disable game fuel. This will sometimes greatly increase performance.

3. Update all cables to at least Cat 5E  or Cat 6 if you can't at least do the WAN port.

4. Try disabling wireless to see if any issues are fixed.

5. Check the connection rates if you getting "Limited or no conductivity" then there is a auto negotiation problem.

How about reading a few pages back. The newest f/w does not work the same for some users no matter what they do. especially A1 users.

Yeah I'm sure they'll fix it soon ::)  Just look how long its been since it was released and the problems being reported.  It wasn't until people started talking to law firms and started filing bbb complaints that they really started to move towards a fix.  I personally received a new a2 to replace my a1 that was trashed by the 1.2x fw.  My a2 is running 1.16b3 and although it racks up a lot of errors on the lan side it doesn't lock up or stop working.  If you happen to have a dgl-4500 that works properly with the post 1.2x firmware then consider yourselves lucky as you are in the minority while the rest are in the majority with problems.  I've considered going to my local hobby shop and purchasing a couple of j rocket motors to propel my a1 to new heights. :P

See it's just really funny that not all these routers are "Junk" like i bought one of these a week ago. I have every port full, wireless enabled, and a hard drive hooked up to it. Have newest firmware installed and my router being going for 6 days so far and its an A1. I'm getting no WAN and LAN errors i found when QOS was enabled i actually got more errors on WAN and LAN but still was only about 1% which is acceptable for packet loss even 20% packet loss is still considered acceptable. As for Wireless yea there is errors but still less then 2% which is also acceptable because you aren't going to find a wireless network without packet loss.

Now for why my router works and others don't thats really the question. They should look into why some A1 models work and some don't. If it's a hardware issue then they should obvious recall the item and allow for replacements. If its a firmware issue they they should just make a firmware that would make the router stable before they start sorting out other bugs.

I've had mine since about the end of April and this is EXACTLY whats happening to mine... no lockups or anything, just constant loss of internet connection. Sometimes the LCD will report that i am offline before kicking me back on, sometimes it doesnt even light up at all i just lose connection. SO IRRITATING. How much longer are we going to have to wait for a fix?

Yea i read most of the forums and i know there looking into things and I'm sure in time they will have a solution.

I have a recommendation to d-link on how to resolve this issue with their customers.  D-link should offer a trade in credit equal to the purchase price of the dgl-4500 towards a new d-link router of the customers choosing.  This would allow the customer to dump their non functioning dgl-4500 for a working router without loosing anything else.  I think that this is the only reasonable and fair solution to address this terrible problem with the firmware that has ruined many of our routers.
