D-Link is ridiculous!!!
« on: September 03, 2009, 09:18:50 AM »

I bought this DIR-825 router a few weeks ago through Newegg.com and I will sending it back very soon. For about three weeks it had a terribly unstable internet connection (both wired and wireless). It would only stay connected for a few minutes before I had to power cycle it. I called tech support several times and was told by the last guy that returning it would probably be my best choice (I'm glad they are honest). A few days ago I updated it and it was still messing up, finally the man gave me a value to set as static for the DNS. It has been working fine since then, but I still plan on returning it for one big reason. That reason is D-Links ridiculous tech support coverage. After the short period of time I will have to pay $32.99 just to talk to them (and only for 30 minutes)!!! I am almost sure that this router will give me problems in the future and I am not paying for them to help me with these faulty products. Just look at these forums, so many people are having trouble with them and they want to charge us? I plan on buying a Netgear, although they are not the best at least they do their job and if they mess up they do not charge for basic support. I am trying to find out if Linksys charges. If they did not charge I would most likely just keep this router.

Am I the only one that feels this way?

My own experience was more positive.  Rock-solid.  Note: "DNS Relay" is disabled - I known quirky feature.

I returned a Linksys WRT160N because it was *horrible* connecting to my two (work) laptops' wireless.  Per reviews, Linksys seems to have "issues" these days (I'm a long-time Linksys fan, BTW).

Bought the Dir-825 HW:B1, and my 802.11G networking (laptops) worked fine, just like my old Linksys WRT54GX4 which died.  I bought a D-Link DWA-160 N USB adapter, and my wireless is now VERY good.

For the Dir-825, I was lucky enough in the store to notice that they had both HW:A1 and HW:B1 (I bought the new one).  For the DWA-160, I knew from the forums to look for HW:B1.

I'm glad that you are having a positive experience. I really would like to keep this router, but with the problems that I have already had so far and knowing that I will have to pay for any future help after 90 days, its simply not worth it. Mine is a H/:W B1 also..

Just checking but have you tried any adjustments to the router first?  It's not uncommon for f/w updates to provide fixes and enhance features while the product is out. So improvements do occur over time. But some tweaks may be very helpful. Just something to consider while you have the item.  Not sure of your technical depth.

In my situation I switched channels on the WiFi side since there are so many  WiFi signals where I live. This can cause issues.  Most people leave the config alone in the router.  I downloaded and used Inssider to determine how many signals were near by, what channel (tells you lots of info on what's going on around you, including the security people are using - or not) they're using, etc.

As for support this isn't too uncommon with companies in my experience. Just push for a higher level of support.  DLink has it also.  I know they have Tier II and maybe even Tier III.  I don't consider their first level support helpful.  You can tell when people are reading instructions from a monitor.
