DIR-825 High Ping - very slow internet
« on: September 05, 2009, 07:07:17 PM »

*edit* btw Hardware revision A1 and now 1.12NA Firmware

I have had my 825 for about 5 months now, no problems until tonight.  I noticed in my online games my ping would spike and I would start lagging.

3 computers are on the wireless network
1 computer wired on 100LAN

only the wireless computers have this problem. wired connection fine.

I did a ping to google then yahoo then facebook and all returned the same results: pings from 400ms spiking to 2500ms and every 10-15 pings, it would time out.

I then took the router out of the loop and connected one of my computers direct to my cable modem.  Everything good, pings in the 15-40ms range, no spiking.

I then found an update to my firmware, proceeded to update it to the latest 112NA

Same problem.  Extreme pings and lag.

I goto www.speedtest.net and do a few tests there, the usual 45ms ping, 9-10mb down - and .45mb up are up to 500ms ping, 4mb down and .1mb upload.  and to note here, instead of a nice steady download speed, the speed bounces around from 1-5mb

What is the problem?

what you are suggesting is that the router is somehow to blame for your high ping speeds on your computers that are connected via wireless.  That being the case, what happens when you ping the router IP address?

Have you tried changing wireless channels?  Most all wireless routers (I thinkt he DLink is the same) all come defaulted to the same wireless radio channel.  If you're in an area where lots of other people around you also have wireless routers or access points, you might be on a very busy channel.   I live out away from my town out in the country and there are at least 3 other wireless routers all in the same street, it's amazing.  The others are all on the same channel though.

I have tried changing to other channels, a channel no one is on, still has not worked.

I ping direct to router from either computer and using the -n 1000 in a cmd window i get very sporadic times, one computer out of 100, maybe 2 or 3 are up in the 1000ms range.  On the other computer its all over the place, pings from 20 to 800ms and everywhere in between, no pattern.
