System Freezes when i boot into Windows with the DWA-552 In.
« on: September 06, 2009, 12:43:20 PM »

I just got my DWA-552 adapter and I first put it in and there were no problems. I threw my CD in and went through the installation but my system did a reboot from doing updates in the middle of the process. Now when I have the card in my system just freezes as soon as I Log on. I took the card out to see if the problem changed and it boots up fine without it in. I figure I needed to reinstall the drivers but without the card in i am unable to take any of the drivers off.

I am running with Vista 32 OS.

If anyone could help that would be very helpful.

Try installing it in a different slot if you can.

In addition, it only freezes once the internet connection is made, So. Boot up, auto connection is made. Computer freezes.

Anyone have a solution to this?

I'm having the same issue.  When card is in and ethernet is connected it works fine.  Complete computer/mouse freeze occurs within ~30 seconds of wireless card connecting to a network.

I'm just going to list all of my specs since i'm unsure what is relevant..

OS:Windows XP SP3 fully updated
Motherboard: GA-P55-UD3R
Ram: 2x 2Gb Patriot Viper II DDR3 1600 Mhz
Video Card: eVGA GFX-260
Processor: Intel i5 750

Solutions I've tried:

- Returning card and replacing it with a different card of the same model.
- Every driver listed on the DLink support site, installed in safe mode after cleaning out old drivers using device manager.
- Different firmware versions for the card.
- Not installing the DLink wireless software, only drivers.
- Reseating card, and trying different pci slots.

Note: Freezing occurs in Safemode with Networking as well as normal mode.
Note x2 : Green light on back of card is lit

This is a new system build, and the wireless card has never worked in the system.  That being said, I have tried the card in a different system which is working with an older G speed card (my old junker, also running xp) and I had the same issue.

Seriously weird.  I'm most likely going to be picking up a different brand to try out later this evening, as i cant figure out a solution for the life of me.

Any ideas before I do?

Hi All,

Doesn't make sense to blame the Card on Freezing.

Try this and see if you guys get freezing when booting up.

No need to uninstall, but stop all your Instant Messenger programs from starting up during the boot process.

Is there any freezing? If yes, then the problem is with the Card. If no, add the Instant Messenger programs back in one at a time and see which one causes the problem.

Windows Live Messenger program, causes freezing.

I used to have problems with the card on XP as well. It may just be a driver issue with XP since I haven't had any problems on Vista or Win 7.

Mizuda

I have a DWA552, and i gave up on it after few weeks trying to solve basic issues.

Instead, i bought a Linksys wrt54gl router, load it up with DD-WRT firmware and set it up as a Bridge. Works a heck of a lot better for the same price of a DWA552 card.

Mizuda,

Anyone using Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) is likely screwed.  I just got off the phone with D-LINK support regarding my own D-Link 552 and that was the eventual answer: their product is not compatible with the current version of Windows XP.

I'm having the same exact issue. Bought mine today from BestBuy. I'm running a brand new rig, Vista 64/Intel i7, don't know if that has anything to do with it, but I plugged it into the MB, ran the drivers, and it actually froze at 95%. I left it for about 10 minutes, still was frozen. So I rebooted, everything booted up fine, but as soon as I connected to my network, whole thing froze. Tried uninstalling and installing in a different PCI slot, same issue. I called DLINK, and they were pretty useless. The guy told me to take a pencil eraser and kind of clean the contacts... supposedly to remove a static charge. I dunno. A buddy of mine has one and his works fine. Might return it for another one, or I might try the DWA-556, maybe the pci-e version isn't as lame.

I have the same problem. I had to remove the card and use my Trendnet USB network adapter to get some work done.

Same issue here.  I actually had the card in place during the windows install and it kept freezing at "Completing Installation..." (I tried 4 times with different BIOS settings, disconnecting keyboard & mouse, etc) so I decided to take it out and voila, the installation worked.

Later on I tried installing the card and the system booted up except the network & sharing center said there were no network connections available and  device manager reported the device could not start.  So I installed the drivers from the CD, which made the computer freeze on startup again.  I uninstalled the driver from Safe Mode, and now the system could boot up normally again except there was no driver for the card.  I figured the driver from the disk was outdated and not compatible with Windows 7, and sure enough, there was an updated version on the website.  So I tried to install that, and the first time it just froze midway through the installation and gave me a grey screen.  When I returned after a hard reboot, a driver was listed for the wifi card but it said the digital signature could not be verified - I'm guessing since the install got interrupted it couldn't copy all the files over.

Basically, I keep either getting a freeze during driver installation, a freeze during startup, or the error "The device could not start" in device manager.  I even tried some Atheros drivers for the AR5008 chip but I had the exact same problems.

Is there no way to get this card to work under Windows 7?

Same problem. Windows 7 64 bit. Tried a million drivers and tricks. Freezes during install process most of the time. Freezes when Windows boots sometimes. Freezes after a minute sometimes. Freezes when connecting to the network always. The new drivers do not help.
