Don't Be Fooled: Large External USB Device's NOT Recognized
« on: September 12, 2009, 02:43:21 PM »

Just purchased the dir-825 with shareport.

Latest firmware and latest utliity are in place.

Found out the hard way that shareport utility does NOT support mass storage devices, IE Maxtor One Touch II 300GB external drives.

The current version of the utility only supports USB flash drives...but nowhere on D-Link's site does it state that, in fact it states USB drives.

I was advised they are working on a new version of Shareport that will support large size external hard drives but no ETA.

Anyone out there have this device and a large device and it's working?

I don't know about the DIR 825, but my DIR-655 USED to work with a large external. Maxtor OneTouch 4 500 GB external.

I got slow speeds though on my laptop, around 1 MB/s. And I would get 4 MB/s on my desktop. Which is ridiculously slow. If I just share the drive on one of the computers, the other gets around 10-12 MB/s.

I decided to upgrade my router's firmware from 1.21 to 1.32 in order to fix this hopefully. As soon as I did, shareport stopped showing both my external and my router.

I have a 1 terabyte Lacie USB external that is recognized by my DIR-825 . The only problem is....  my connection to lan, wan and internet drops off on a regular basis (and as a result, so does the sharepor).

Firmware 1.32NA, SharePort Utility version 1.1.9

My External WD MyBook 1 TB USB drive works perfectly with SharePort.  Only problem is that I only get a throughput of around 15 Mbps.

I have 4 300gb fujitsu, 2 1 tb western digitals and 1 snap 2tb and they are all recognized and usable on my DIR-825 b router.

I just hate that I can't have multiple computers connected to a HD at once.

I have the dir-655 with the new beta firmware 1.34na as well as using the new version of shareport  1.2.0 b3, attached is the iomega 1tb usb hdd. when attempting to use shareport it will show the drive properly in the shareport window, and when connecting will say it is connected, but it is not recognized by windows, then it will tell me it has not been disconnected properly and attempt to reconnect with the same results. i also have a 320 gb external hd which will work properly with shareport. i hope a solution comes out soon.

Which, of course, has absolutely nothing to do with SharePort. If multiple computers had access to the same drive at the same time, the file system would be corrupted in seconds - which computer would manage the file system?

I guess the same way Windows or Linux does it.

We certainly don't see any issues with USB Hard Drives or Flash Drives. One thing to note is that Disk Drives are fully scanned by Windows Systems when they are connected directly via USB before they are mounted (drive letter available). With larger sized drives, this can take several minutes before disk drives become available when connecting via SharePort.

I am seeing a difference. my flash drive is working fine and so is my portable hard drive. when i plug the flash into my DIR-635 shareport works fine.

when i plug in the protable hard drive to the unit i get repeated notification dialogs in the botom right corner that says the device is found (every 10 seconds actualy) corresponding with my detection interval time. i also get an audible click from the HD roughly every 5 seconds.

BUT .... the utility doesn't do anything
it continues to say "No USB device is detected.
Please plug in one of the below USB devices.
(Printer, MFP, Scanner, Storage Devices)"

again, there is no problem with the flash drive or the hard drive when connected to the computer and the flash works fine in the DIR-635

Don't be cheap and get yourself a real NAS if that are your requirements. It's like complaining about your Fiat 500 that it does not perform as well as a Ferrari because it is build by the same firm.  ;)
