I am having the exact same issue with a late 2008-2009 MBP. Streaming video from a DNS-323 is choppy. I use VLC and have cranked up all the buffers but to no avail. But, if I set the 655 to 'g' only, all my issues go away. Video is smooth and works fine with the default buffers. I don't care if I only get 130MBps but why can't I even maintain a decent 'n' connection?
Update...
After playing around with it some more, I found that if I selected a Transmission Rate (MCS 14 - 117 [243] in my case) my lag issues all went away. I did try it with MCS 15 and my MBP connected fine but my Airport Express which is further away did not. My guess is that the lagging I was experiencing came from the router constantly playing with the link speed trying to optimize it. Also, I should say that I have H/W Rev A4 with the non-beta 1.32NA firmware.
Another update...
Making the above changes seems to have fixed the jerky YouTube playback I was experiencing.
