Dir 655 and imac in wireles n
« on: September 12, 2009, 03:09:19 PM »

hi
this is my problem:
i have a dir 655 that works fine in 'g' mode with my laptop,Wii iPhone, nintendo ds but not well with my new imac in wireles 'n'
when i look status in router page it show me a rate of connection  about 5 to max 48 mbps for imac.
it show me it' regulary connected in wireless 'n' 2,4ghz mode.
i***et info from the network utility of macos it says it' connected in 'n' mode at 144 mbps but i never get that speed ..even  transferring files from other pc's.
my setting of router are the same of topic "300 mbps... "...in this forum ..so wpa2 ...aes ...etc.etc  but i don't know why it's too slow.
Router is placed in a room and there are two wall of 10 cm between it and imac but they stays on the same floor at 7meter distance .
any suggestion???
thanks Cheope

I don't have a Mac and I'm not familiar with its HW either, but it seems like your Mac bonded with the router at 20MHz channel width. Try setting up your router according to this thread http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=616.0 .

After a deep serch on the web this is what i've found:
it's seems that imac wireles'n only use the 20 mhz subchannel of the 2,4 ghz frequency(don't use the 40mhz) !! so the rate is limited to 130 mbps. this is an apple limitation to avoid interference with imac bluetooth devices!
Using a double channel router (not dir 655) the wireless 'n of Airport automatically sets the 5ghz channel so it can use full rate speed
i'm thinking to wire my imac using the gbit lan

I can't connect at n speed at all, all I get is 54 with both my iMac and MacBook. Could you share your wireless settings so that I could give them a try?

thanks.

are you sure that imacs are connected at 54g rate??
I ask because reading a post in forum someone say  that the speed of connection you must see is that reported in the network utility on imac and not that shown in the router page.
I've tryed many settings and even with imac at 50 cm from router the maximum rate shown by imac is 170mps...when at the same time router show48 mbps... tranferring files confirm that the real speed was aruond 130mps.
here my wifi configuration on router:

802.11 Mode : Miexd 802.11n and 802.11g

Enable Auto Channel Scan :--not selected

Wireless Channel : ch 11

Transmission Rate : (Mbit/s) best (automatic)

Channel Width : auto (20/40mhz)

Visibility Status : Visible

Security Mode :   WPA

WPA Mode : Auto WPA or WPA2

Cipher Type : TKIP and AES

Group Key Update Interval : 3600 (seconds)3600

I am having the exact same issue with a late 2008-2009 MBP.  Streaming video from a DNS-323 is choppy.  I use VLC and have cranked up all the buffers but to no avail.  But, if I set the 655 to 'g' only, all my issues go away.  Video is smooth and works fine with the default buffers.  I don't care if I only get 130MBps but why can't I even maintain a decent 'n' connection?

Update...
After playing around with it some more, I found that if I selected a Transmission Rate (MCS 14 - 117 [243] in my case) my lag issues all went away.  I did try it with MCS 15 and my MBP connected fine but my Airport Express which is further away did not.  My guess is that the lagging I was experiencing came from the router constantly playing with the link speed trying to optimize it.  Also, I should say that I have H/W Rev A4 with the non-beta 1.32NA firmware.

Another update...
Making the above changes seems to have fixed the jerky YouTube playback I was experiencing.
