DIR-655 Sharepoint and movie transmission
« on: September 13, 2009, 12:37:47 AM »

Guys,

Anybody know why there is such bad throughput between a USB device connected to the DIR-655 Sharepoint and a wireless-N  PC on the network?

I have a lot of movies on my desktop C drive in the studio, which is wired to the DIR-655 router. Sometimes I watch a movie in another part of the house on a wireless-N laptop, accessing the C drive of the studio desktop across the wireless network. This works amazingly well.

Problem is, I ran out of space on the desktop and bought an external USB hard drive-- then discovered all the USB ports are in use! I don't currently have a USB hub so I thought I would put some movies on the hard drive and connect it to the USB port of the DIR-655.

This works fine for the desktop, which is wired to the router, but when accessing the hard drive through Sharepoint using the wireless laptop, the movies stop and start. The problem compounds if the movie is high def.

It's weird because the transmission speed of the network at the laptop is at least 270 Mbps, which is more than enough. It's as if the bottleneck is somewhere between the hard drive, the USB connection and the Router itself. Wait, but if that were true, then even the wired connection would not work...

Anybody have a clue what may be the issue here and if it has a solution?

   Thanks in advance.

The max transmission speed through Shareport is about 4 MB/s (wired). High def. movies require a much bigger throughput, depending on the framerate. You can look for various other Shareport topics where there's a logical explaination why the USB conncection through the router is not 400 mbps and will not be any faster.

  EddieZ,

   Thanks for your comment.

Well, yes I will be interested to find out why there is such a restriction on Shareport USB throughput!

Can't be a restriction of USB itself ---- I'll try to find it in another forum, very curious. Any idea which forums would be helpful?

This leads me directly to the question of why the USB throughput was ok for my desktop wired to the router. I was even able to watch a high def movie from the Shareport hard drive via the desktop.....

So USB throughput is fine when directed to the Ethernet port but not when broadcast over the wireless??????

It's simply a limit hardware inside the 655.  It probably takes too much CPU to effectively transfer data at a fast speed from shareport over wireless.

encryption on wireless should take some resources from the processor.

Shareport is great for printers, but not for storage.  There really isn't any router I can think of that provides great throughput.  Even most cheap NAS devises are pretty poor, due to poor CPU performance on those devices.

Unless you are willing to spend $$$, adding storage to an existing computer is the best way to do it and then sharing it out over the network.  For the price of a a good NAS device, you could probably build a decent nas device just buying used parts from forums like anandtech.com and it could do more things.

Thanks everybody!  These are great comments.

It makes perfect sense that the encryption needed for the wireless transmission would slow things down -- whereas the wired connection is more of a straight throughput.

I'm not familiar with Nas devices, so I will go with what I should have done in the first place -- buy a USB hub, connect it to my desktop and add the external hard drive there...... should be no problem.

Of course, all this has caused another problem for me. Thinking the slow throughput of the Shareport may have been fixed in later releases, I upgraded from 655 release 1.21 to 1.32 NA.... it did nothing for the throughput problem, but now the wireless-N PC is seeing transmission speeds of 11 - 45 Mbps instead of the 270 - 300 Mbp I had worked to so hard to achieve previously. Uggghhhh!!

Strangely another PC, which has wireless-G is seeing what it saw before the upgrade, 130 Mbps.

So this is my next hurdle to try to overcome.

But I guess that is the topic for another thread.........

Or not.  If you have any suggestions about this, I am all ears.

    Thanks so much guys!

... I went ahead and opened up a new topic for the wireless N transmission drop issue.

Please if you have any ideas, post in "Followed Sticky Topic: 300 Mbps to great success....".

      Thanks.

Hi,

Here is a link for an external enclosure that has an ethernet port,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817193035&cm_re=external_enclosure_ethernet-_-17-193-035-_-Product

Haven't used it myself...but it might do what you need.... Newegg has several others besides that particular unit.

These unit typically runs slowly over ethernet so better not use it.

A cheap but fast single drive NAS is the Buffalo LinkStation Pro http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/30760/75/ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822165154&cm_re=buffalo_linkstation_pro-_-22-165-154-_-Product
