DIR-625 Rev C Randomly Reboots
« on: September 17, 2009, 05:42:08 AM »

Hi,

I have a new DIR-725 Rev C.  It has the Firmware updated to 3.08.  When I first got it it worked fine for about 2 weeks.  Now it randomly reboots itself for no reason.  When this happens I see on my PC (and others connected that are running) the message that the ethernet cable has been disconnected.  This lasts for a few seconds.  If I look at the router the instant I see this message I can see that all the lights have turned off and the unit looks dead.  After a few more seconds they come back on solid and then start blinking in their normal patterns.
This will happen at various random times but averages at about once every 45 minutes.  I have a friend who bought one of these at about the same time I did and he is having the exact same problem.  Another thing I see is that when I go to open a website, on about half the attempts I get the message "Attempting to connect to www.website.com" and it never loads.  If I re-select the website when this happens it will work.  I'm wondering if I have a bad unit but I'm questioning this as my friend is having the exact problem with his.

Regards,

Aservire

downgrade to firmware 3.06, there are less reliability issues with that one, mine has been a rock for 28 days so far, but when I loaded 3.08 it would lock up after 7-8 days

Question.
Does resetting to factory defaults downgrade your firmware?

No, you have to reload the old version.

I am having the same issues with Rev C firmware 3.08. Mine also worked fine for some time but now every few days I will get the full router reset where it tells me my cable is unplugged.

All the time however when using the wireless I will have websites timeout and I have to continually refresh. It will say "looking up" or "waiting for" or "transferring data from" in my status bar. When this is happening sometimes the router responds when I go to 192.168.0.1 and other times I can't even load the router page. At the exact time all of this is happening I will go check my wired connection and it is working perfectly.

After some time of this the router will go back to working normally but then the issue will return 10 or 20 or even 30 mins later. I have the issue while standing right next to my router at 100% 300Mbps signal strength. I am connected using wireless N with WPA2 AES enabled.

Here are my wireless stats after about an hour of surfing:

Sent :82693

TX Packets Dropped :410

Received :47827

RX Packets Dropped :10794

Errors :4406

Any one else having these issues? Any solutions? Is this the router or maybe some interference in my house?

Is there anyone on this forum? Anyone else experiencing this issue? My email to technical support didn't really get me very far.

I had the same with 3.08.

1. Downgrade to 3.06

2. Apply 30-30-30
30 sec keep reset button down
power off
30 sec keep reset button down
power up
30 sec keep reset button dow

3. changed the MTU to 1364. (I use ADSL)

Hope it helps

I downgraded to 3.06 but the problem remains. What could be causing this? My signal strength is good. Why can't I just get a damn wireless router that actually works. I am so fed up with all this crap.

So I am still having the same problem. Anyone have any other suggestions? Am I just router cursed?

To killerz298:

I don't know whether your periodic router reboots are related to the poor wireless performance you are experiencing.  Assuming these problems are not related, you might investigate whether the problem is in the other device, since two ends are required to make a wireless link.

Regarding your interference question, I'd be surprised if any household source of radio-frequency interference (RFI), other than a microwave oven, would be so strong that it could overwhelm a 2-3 foot 802.11n link, provided that both devices are working properly.  However, if you do suspect RFI, there are a number of ways to go about troubleshooting. Assuming you have no instruments, you could start by eliminating potential sources of 2.4 GHz interference, such as microwave ovens, portable phones, cell phones, computers, light dimmers, chargers for battery-operated devices, anything with a switching power supply, and the like. You may need to remove power to these devices completely (including batteries), because some actually continue to operate despite ostensibly being turned "off".

If I were doing this, I would find the circuit breaker for the circuit that powers the router, and the next time the wireless link appears to be sluggish, I'd turn off every other circuit in the load center (fuse box).  Then I'd unplug and turn off everything else connected to the circuit that powers the router, and shut off any portable phones and cell phones.  That should rule out RFI sources in your own home. If the router's wireless performance immediately returns to nominal, then you can start plugging things back in and turning breakers back on until the problem comes back.

If the problem does not go away, either it's not caused by interference, or the interference is coming from outside your home.  RFI, like other RF, goes through walls, floors, ceilings, roofs, etc. (unless they contain metal, foil, or mesh).  This is more of a problem in multi-unit dwellings than in detached single-family homes.

Best of luck and happy New Year!
