Using DIR655 to wirelessly connect to IPTV (GekTV)
« on: September 17, 2009, 03:00:28 PM »

I want to use the DIR655 Router with IPTV (GekTV). A subscriber to GEKTV is provided a Receiver (GEK1080HD) with a LAN port to connect to the internet. I currently have an 802.11b router and desktop computer in one room of my house and run a wired LAN connection from the router two rooms down the hallway to the GekTV Receiver in another room in my house. GekTV recommends 3.0 Mbps or above connection speed, and it works OK with this wired configuration (Cox high Speed Internet).

I want to replace the 802.11b router with the DIR655 router and wirelessly transmit to an access point in the room containing the GekTV Receiver. The access point must have a LAN (Ethernet) port that I can connect to the GekTV Receiver.

I have tried using a powerline ethernet adapter and there was too much throughput loss.  What should I purchase as an access point (if that is what it is called) that will have sufficient throughput and range to work with the DIR655 Router and GekTV Receiver?

Thank you

Hi,

The DIR-655 should work nicely..just DO NOT update the firmware to the latest 1.3X version; read about issues on this forum if you want to know why I say that.

I use Vonage VoIP box off my DIR-655 with zero issues; I use firmware v1.21

Does your ISP have a usage cap on your tier of service ?  I would think watching TV for extenede periods might run in to a use cap during the month....  just a thought...

Thanks for the response.  I'm a newbie at this and need clarification regarding your response.

I have Cox High Speed Cable Internet Service and was looking for a wireless access point (with a LAN port) to receive signals wirelessly from the DIR655 router.  The Access point would be connected to the GEK Receiver via a wired LAN connection.

Are you suggesting that the Vonnage VoIP box would be the access point?  I don't plan on subscribing to Vonnage internet service when I already have Cox High Speed Cable Internet Service.

Hi,

No, not at all was I suggesting that you subscribe to vonage.  I was simply stating that I use my vonage in a similiar fashion to what you described wanting to do with the IPTV box.

The DIR-655 is not really meant to be an access point, altho I believe that some folks may well use it in that fashion, altho I can't tell you how they may have gotten that accomplished.

I have used successfully a powerline networking "extension" of my home network, it is akin to wireless networking but uses your home's power lines to pass the signal over to another part of your home.  I would think with a TV signal over IP you would want the newest Powerline hardware which runs at some "roughly" 240 Mbps (Mega-bits-per-second) by the math (real world will likelt be less than the mathematical speed).... My powerline hardware is older and the speed is only like 14 Mbps which is fine for my XBox360 that uses it.

Wireless .11N has a "math" speed of 300 Mbps, but who knows what your real world might deliver due to the requirements for the 300 Mbps to be realized by .11N hardware.
