In response to Lycan about B1 Security Issue
« on: September 21, 2009, 12:19:18 PM »

Lycan, I am really surprised and taken back by your response.  When I purchased Dlink products, I knew people could come here and talk directly to a Dlink Technical Engineers.  Not only to work on issues they were having with their Dlink products but to help improve the product as well.  The people that post here want is a simple, timely and professional response from someone how knows the product the best.  I have no idea who BOFslime is and quite frankly I don't want to know.  I want an answer from the people, like yourself, that actually work for Dlink.  Sure, I can pick up the phone and call but why would Dlink have a link to this forum on the main product website...Because it is another form of customer communication.  This form of communication is the form that many here have chosen and no matter how silly you and Dlink think an issue may be, it still deserves a timely and professional response.

Your answer and your answer alone has put a bad taste in my mouth.  Not only does Dlink have major issues with their products today (unlike a few years back) but you also have major communications issues and public relations issues.  I don't think that the post about the 825B1 security issues (stealthed ports 0 and 1, to be specific) was at all SILLY.  We were concerned and a simple technical answer from a Technical Engineer explaining why this issue (or non-issue) was of no concern would have been fine, without the dripping sarcasm and smart*** last line.  To quote, "I'm locking this thread due to it's silliness."

Lycan, thank you for making up my mind about Dlink and Dlink products.  You have now lost a valued customer and I vow that I will unhook, return, sell, destroy every Dlink product I own and I will NEVER deal with Dlink again.  I have always advertised Dlink as being one of the most professional, technically advanced and reliable company's out there today.  I have always recommended Dlink, to many people...but NOT now.  You have lost me with just one line of text.  Very, very unprofessional on your part.

Lycan,

I second Kanati's response. I was looking for an explanation why you felt this was not a problem and why it is happening. I have just purchase a Netgear WNDR 3700 that I believe has the same chipset. I will be testing the ports scan as soon as I receive it. My DIR 655 with the 1.3x firmware is junk. At 1.11 it was running weeks with no reboot. Then I moved the the DIR-825 thinking that the problems would not occur with this higher value router. Now with 2.02NA I have intermittent reboots. Dropped wireless signals. DHCP problems acquiring ip addresses. My wife is taking an online course and got disconnected 2 times during a test and almost cost her her grade! The firmware on these routers must be fixed. (an yes I have DNS relay disabled)
I am hearing nothing but great reviews on the Netgear product and if that pans out I say goodbye to DLINK. And I too was a very long time loyal consumer. I am in sales and the locked thread reply from you was not very professional.

The topic was locked because the thread was in a term silly. The idea that to be "secure" requires that a firewall reports it's ports as stealth-ed is silly. If you were offended by my statement I sincerely apologize. in fact I will change the last statement to avoid further insult.

As for your understanding of D-Links involvement here, there are two schools of thought and both can be taken as correct. D-Links official postion is that these forums are beta and were implemented to allow the community at large to work together as a team to solve issues. That doesn't mean that the Mod's are not involved but that it's not the primary goal.

The second school of thought is that these forums are a method for direct access to D-Link engineers. While this fact is true it's not an effective use of the resource that this forum is intended to provide, the community at large.

Well, you certainly showed "the community at large" today what Dlink really thinks of its customers.  Like I said, silly or not, each customer should be treated with respect and professionalism.  You chose a different route.  If I were your boss, I would fire you and send you on your way.

You still lost a loyal and long time customer today.  Whether you change the statement or not, you proved to me today that the customer is far down the Dlink priority list.  If you look at your avatar it says you are a Dlink Technical Engineer.  Whatever you reflect here, reflects directly onto Dlink.

Again,
you're taking the statement personally when it was made about the topic itself and then retracted to to appease your sensitivity.

This is not helping anyone and is not of a technical nature. I will lock this thread.
