DSM-750 laggy videos
« on: September 21, 2009, 09:10:20 PM »

I had a DSM 520 for years and played all my video avi/divx files just fine.  Everything was smooth and perfect.  I decided to upgrade to the DSM 750 so I gave my old 520 away.  I stream everything with TVersity to my xbox 360 just fine and to the old 520.  I hooked up my new 750 for the HD and was excited until I actually tried to play a video.  All of the videos seemed real laggy almost like bad fps on a pc game.  I was running everything wirelessly so I decided to run a cable.  Same problem.  I updated the firmware and same problem.  I decided to use Vista and stream to it as a media extender.  Same problem.  I then tried windows 7 to stream to it and same problem.  I thought well lets just rule out the network and copied various videos to a thumb drive and still same problem.  The sound is perfect but the video just seems like it pauses over and over again really really fast and just looks laggy/choppy to the point i cant use it.  I spent alot of money for this thing and it is pretty much useless since I have bought it.  Do i have a defective unit or is there something wrong w/ my videos.  I assumed they would be fine as these same videos work fine on my 360 or the old dsm 520.  Any help would be appreciated.  Also i have no idea to tell what video type or audio is encoded so if someone needs me to check please provide me w/ a name of a program that will tell me this info.

Thanks,
Greg

Do you have this issue with other video types? Did you create these files and if so what software was used?

Greg - I am having similar issues - I have tried a dozen HD formats - DivX, ASF, H.264, XVid, WMV, etc.  No better.  All using Media Center and Win 7 RC.  I too have tired the wired vs wireless test - no change.  Running the network tuning on Media Center indicated a bandwidth issue (100MB wired and 802.11n wireless)....

Rick

Update - used the gSpot codex to check for packed files - not the case.  Still having jumpy / sluggish playback, but  on Blu-Ray files...regular video plays perfectly.  Not sure if I have a network bandwidth issue or Media Center can't pump enough bits.  Processor is barely working.

I had a DSM-320 and all my AVI files were fine then when I got my 750 most (but not all) of my AVI files were jerky - My problem was that it seems that 750 does not like the "packed" AVI files. If I unpack them then they play perfectly. Below is a link to the TVersity support where is describes where to get the free tool to pack/unpack AVI. For the 750 you will need to use the unpack option rather than the pack option.

You can use gspot to check out your AVI files and if under the "video" box on the right the little "PB" if green then it's packed. If it's not green then it's unpacked.

What is the resolution you are outputting to your TV? The box may say it can handle 1080 but I had to switch to 720. That solved the problem for me. Sucks, I know...

This happens with packed bitstreams in AVIswith XviD, DivX compression.

http://forums.tversity.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=28130&p=80989&hilit=750#p80989 here way around this for both DSM 320 and DSM 750 is described. But it`s a pain

p.s.  Ooops, sorry for duplicate link. Didn`t notice the same one above

Hello every one. I just joined the DLink family. a week ago i bought a DSM-750 and i have many problems with it. i had the jittery playback issue as well and my first thought was my band width not being sufficient and was going to buy a dual band router.

the problem i had was during wireless playback there were parts of the movie(xvid format) that would playback jittery and jumpy with not voice. but apparently the bandwidth is not the issue since i tried playback from usb drive and had the same problem. I saw the link for the batch file and will give it a try for sure but my problem is not only xvid videos but HD(MKV) videos have the same problem. i tried short HD movies directly from usb drive and the playback is awful. jittery, no voice and very disappointing. I called customer support and all i got was the question "do you have the latest firmware" and yes i do. they also promised that "the specialist" will call me, which never did.

anyways guys, any help from this forum is appreciated, as being able to stream HD movies even at 720p resolution was the only reason for purchasing this device. as you are aware there are much cheaper solutions in the market (western digital) that do not offer the wireless option but work flawlessly otherwise.

i really want to believe in my purchase and try to get it to work.

thank you
