Will this adapter be compatable with a DIR-655?
« on: September 23, 2009, 07:08:35 AM »

I have a computer that needs an adapter with a low profile bracket.  The D-link ones are too big.

Should there be any compatablility issues with this adapter?  Would I be better off sticking with my D-Link USB adapter?

Hi,

I would try and find an adapter with .11N ability.... but thats me.

Some adapters come with a low-profile bracket that can be installed after removing the original bracket....

Hi,

Quick search on Newegg.com shows this item with a low-profile bracket:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166051&cm_re=.11n-_-33-166-051-_-Product

I would bet they must have a number of others with the low-profile bracket

Is the USB one a N adapter?

DWA-142 so it is Draft N, but the router is set to mixed because we have a G card in the network.

The card also has to be a certain size.  Most cards are too big.

The DWA-140 works great with the DIR-655.  It's USB, so as long as you've got USB 2.0 (450 Mbps) you should be good for N connection speeds of up to 300Mbps.  I usually get a 200+ connection through 2 walls (40 feet I'd guess).  Actual speed is about the same as 100Mbps Ethernet, as long as there's no G activity (my DIR-655 is set to mixed-mode G/N.

You should be getting about the same results with the DWA-142, if the G device is offline.  Onless you're having problems I would stick with the DWA-142.

BTW, bought the DWA-140 online at J&R - was cheaper than Newegg (and still is).

i do think you should go USB.  PCI's antenna is too low and can be blocked by the case
