DIR655 - Shareport - "Read Only" Access to HDD
« on: September 25, 2009, 02:41:06 AM »

I recently upgraded to Firmware 1.32NA and after a week of playing around have finally managed to get all computers (mixture of Mac and PC) to access the router and the HDD plugged in the back (that damn "enable multicast streams" button).

My issue now is that all computers have read-only access the HDD. This wasn't an problem on earlier firmware versions. I cant figure out if it is a SharePort, router, HDD or a PC/Mac issue so am not sure where to start looking for changes in settings.

Surprisingly there aren't another 20 topics on this issue so any advice is appreciated.

PS: thanks D-Link for stealing another 2hrs of my life.

I suspect it is not a Shareport or router issue, since both the software and the router lack the functionality to make devices read-only or have any form of user management... That pins it down to HDD and/or OS. So I guess that's not Dlink to blame for those 2 hrs  ;)

Hi,

Not that its relevant exactly, but I know if you attach an external USB hard drive to an XBox360 USB port, it works only in Read-Only Mode....you have to pony up for a special Xbox360 hard drive to get Read/Write hard drive access....

As EddieZ pointed out it could well be an OS setting that makes it Read only...being that the Hard drive is seen as a Network Device and NOT a local hard drive, Windows tends to default to lower security settings on Network Drives....Can't speak to MacOS.... Which may end up in the read-only mode of operation.

SO I would add to your (OP) question:  How does one access drive security settings for a Hard drive set up using Share Port ??

Don't know about PS3 issues, but if the disk properties have been altered (access restricted) before being attached you could try to change the security settings of the disk through Properties. Just like you would do with an internal HDD which has been used with another OS.

I am not convinced that it is a OS or HDD issue. Nothing has been changed on 2 PC's that previously could read/write to the HDD. Nothing has been changed on the HDD. It was since installing 1.32NA that I only have read only access.

I have also added 2 Mac's. Both have read only access.

Fact remains that the router itself has no priviliges mechanism. How have you tested the read-only access?

Have you try plugging the external HD directly to the computer you're having problem with? If it does not work then it's permission/owner issues, if otherwise it's Shareport issue.

When I plug the HDD directly into the laptop, I have read/write permissions. Plug it back into the router and it reverts to read only.
