I plan to buy DNS-323 for my home network, I will upgrade my 3 computers to Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bits) next month.

The Vista 64 bits drivers ont the web site are compatible with Windows 7 (64 bits) ?

You don't need the drivers for the DNS-323 to work properly in *any* version of Windows or Mac OS.

Having said that, I don't know if they are Win7 compatible and I'm not willing to try given my poor history with the PNP-X driver on 64-bit systems.

I run WIndows 7 release on two systems, they network just fine with my DNS-323 and DNS-321 RAID-1 boxes.  As mentioned, no drivers required, they're just SMB network connected devices.

Why D-Link release drivers for Vista 32 and 64 bits on their web site if they are not needed???

With these drivers installed the DNS will be displayed as DNS-323 with its own icon in the Vista network map - no langer only as a network storage.
They are just for UPNP recognition of the devices.

But they are not needed for daily work with it.

Both the DNS-321 and the DNS-323 appear on my network map with no drivers installed.  They also have  specific graphics that accurately reflect the look of each of the devices.  This is the same for my Vista machine with the proper graphics, also no drivers for the NAS boxes.  My D-Link DIR-615 router also appears with an appropriate icon on the map.

I'll say it again, no drivers are required, and I have no idea what the drivers are for.

I have installed the PnP-X Driver 1.02 on both my Windows 7 machines 32-bit and 64-bit, when you click on the DNS-323 icon in the Network it starts installing a driver of some kind then fails, I used the above driver which says it has Vista 32/64-Bit support to install a driver called D-Link Network Storage Enclosure under Disk drives in device manager, it gets stuck on installing driver but the driver looks like it's installed ok, then eventually says driver installation timed out and when I shutdown the computer I get a BSOD about driver state failure.
Some people say I don't need the driver, but device manager says unknown device DNS-323.

Since I never installed those drivers, and never intend to, I have no idea about the crashes.

Does it show up in your device manager as an unknown device or with a ? next to the device driver

Dlink needs to release Windows 7 drivers, I hear they will be releasing a version 2 driver soon, btw do you have any Nokia software installed? like Nokia PC Suite or Bluetooth drivers? I think they may be related in some way

I still have not heard anyone that can tell me what these drivers are supposed to accomplish.

It's been said they're to make the proper icons appear in the Vista (and Win7) network map, but clearly that's not required.  I don't have the drivers, and those functions work fine for me on both Vista and Win7.

Obviously, there must be some function that these drivers satisfy, can anyone tell me what they're actually for?

I've used my DNS-323 and DNS-321 boxes here for some time, and I've never needed any drivers.

All I know is after installing the driver it creates a network folder to the NAS in My Computer using the IP address/Volume_1 in it's shortcut properties and also changes the icon of the NAS icon in the Network area, so the icon and properties are different than mapping the drive itself.
