DSM-750 & DIR-655 USB SharePort... possible?
« on: September 28, 2009, 09:35:56 PM »

I used to have in my bedroom a PS3 with a external WD Passport 500GB drive (with all my movies there).

Today I received a DSM-750 I bought online to place it in my bedroom TV and move the PS3 to the living room. The problem I now have is since the WD Passport doesn't have power adapter (it used the power from the connected device) it seems to be that the DSM-750 doesn't work with it, since it doesn't provide enough power.

So now I'm stocked... and I'm wondering if I can connect that external drive to my DIR-655 router using the USB port and have the DSM-750 access the drive via the network.

Is that possible?

I don't think a lot of people are terribly impressed with the quality of the Shareport (with it consistently working).  I have the DSM-750 and the DIR-655, but I also have the DNS-323 (network attached storage device).  The DSM-750 detects the networked storage device, but that has a UPnP AV server built in.  With the Shareport, I think you have to install the utility and drivers on each device that's going to use it, so I wouldn't be terribly hopeful that you'll be able to use that to stream videos to your DSM-750.  I think your best bet would be to use something like Tversity or PlayOn or WMP or Windows Media Center to stream videos to the DSM-750.  You could still attach the WD drive to the Shareport (assuming that even works with the power consumption), but instead of going from the WD directly to the DSM-750, it would go from the WD to your pc to the DSM-750.

No it is not as the sharport utility cannot be installed to the DSM-750 and that is required for sharport to work on a PC.
