Because I just plugged it into my computer and it wouldn’t read, so I plugged it back in and the enclosure and that won’t read now!!!

It’s asking me to format my hard drive

Hi lim,

I'll assume you placed it back in the same slot.  Additionally, I'll further assume that the HDD was not part of a RAID1 configuration.

If the version on the DNS-323 is 1.07 (or lower), you should be able to use EXT2IFS to view the contents of the file system on your workstation.

That still didn't work

Is it because windows might have removed the partition on the hdd?

Might have to do a file recovery, do you have any recommended programs?

32MB doesn't look right to me ...  it appears like another device is occupying drive letter 'G'.

Have a look at the Troubleshooting section of the EXT2IFS site ... I believe there is a utility that allows you to force mount (Read Only) EXT2/3 volumes.

1) What is the manufacturer and model of the HDD's used in your DNS - ST31000340ASSD15?

2) What was the disk configuration you chose on the DNS - ex: RAID1, single volume(s), etc.

3) What is the firmware version on the DNS?


Few suggestions:

1) Use different drive letters for mounting - ex: 'M', 'N', 'X', etc.

2) If you have a WinXP workstation, try using that so as to rule out Vista/Win7 issues.

ST31000340ASSD15 is correct - I've got 2 of these.

This is where I fail - I'm not sure how to do this, I've tried reading the FAQ
from this page http://www.fs-driver.org/faq.html
but every time I type in CMD
mountvol H:\ \\?\Volume{241c8cc6-c4e4-11db-8168-c5932447ec37}
I get "The parameter is incorrect (see http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/6505/ss1hf.jpg)
H is the Drive letter I'm trying to assign to.

I don’t have WinXP any more.

I plugged this into my Win7 workstation and I’ve plugged this into my laptop as an external drive using esata -both computer had same results.

The original problem was that a lot of my files like .doc, .docx, psd were locked out and I was not able to access them “Access Denied” or “file has been locked”.
I checked the security settings on each of these files and noticed that there was no permission for “everyone” (can’t remember the exact name).
I checked other working files and the permission was there…
So I tried plugging the HDD into my PC – for some reason I thought it was NTFS format

Hi lim,

According to the FAQ, there should be a control panel item for setting the drive letters.  Can you confirm that this applet is present?

For the MOUNTVOL utility, the GUID noted is for example purposes.  The GUID on your system will likley be different.

Lastly, the permissions you saw on the files were set by the DNS file system.  By connecting the HDD to your workstation, Windows likely initialized the HDD for use with Windows resulting in loss of the partition.  You could look at 3rd party utilities (ex: Paragon) to see if the paritition can be recovered; at this stage however, you likely have lost the data stored on the HDD.

Standard
Creates two separate volumes (or one volume if only one hard drive is present). Each hard drive is its own volume.

JBOD (Linear)
Combines both hard drives in a linear fashion which will create one large volume geared towards maximum available space.

RAID 0
Combines both hard drives in a striped fashion which will create one large volume geared towards maximum performance.

RAID 1
Mirrors the hard drives for redundancy. If one hard drive fails, the other still has all of the data. Replace the failed hard drive and it will re-mirror, restoring maximum data protection.
 
If you setup your HDD's in either JBOD or RAID 0 than you probably will NOT be able to access the data on them from a windows OS. You will need to mount both drives at the same time as the DNS does and I don't think windows can do this even with the EXT2IFS drivers installed.

I've already looked there and it only picks up the drive as G: 32mb (see http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/6505/ss1hf.jpg)
going to give this http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/ a go.
I've tried the Linux Recovery 2.2 and it is picking up Linux native Voume 1 drive but wasn't able to recovery anything...

Hi Rodent,

I didn’t do any raid config on the drive so its just 2 separate drives detected as Volume 1 and Volume 2.
Atm I am looking for a partition / file recovery program to try recover my files

Apparently there is an issue with some large capacity HDDs thinking they are only 32MB. This link may help:

Glad to read that you got it working; I suggest the following approach:

1) Obtain one/two additional "external" HDD (preferably same capacity/model)
2) Format these HDD's; use an easily accessible partition type (ex: NTFS)
3) Copy the salvageable Volume_1/Volume_2 content to them
4) Reinitialize (reformat) the HDD's in the DNS
5) Copy your files back up to the respective Volumes; do not touch permissions on the folders or files


Backup/Spare:

1) Remove the existing partitions on one of the additional "external" HDD and keep it as a spare in case one fails in the DNS
2) Use the other "external" HDD as a backup HDD and use it for compress backup of DNS Volume_1/Volume_2


Few Alternatives:

- Obtain an additional DNS and use it as a backup source; turn on for backup, then turn off
- RAID1 (mirror) the HDD's in the DNS to provide some redundancy
