Losing connection to DSL modem every few days
« on: October 02, 2009, 08:10:23 PM »

(RE-POSTING THIS QUESTION AS MY PREVIOUS POST DISAPPEARED)

Hello, I have the D-Link DIR-655 router connected by cable to my AT&T provided DSL modem. There's usually two wireless clients to the router, one a desktop PC with a D-Link DIR-552, the other is a laptop with an older "G" type wireless chipset.

For a few days the connection is fine, then suddenly the router will drop the connection to the DSL modem. I'll load up the router's internal web-page and it's disconnected. I'll try to reconnect it manually using the "Connect" button and it won't connect, after maybe eight or nine times and clicking Refresh in the browser, it'll come up with a web-page showing something to the effect of "measuring gateway speed", then it's back again for a few days.

Some settings which I'm using on the router:

Enable Advanced DNS Service: No
Visibility Status: Invisible
Encryption: WPA-Personal & WPA2 Only (AES)
Enable DNS Relay: Yes
Enable DHCP Server: Yes
Enable securespot™ services: No

I'm using MAC address filtering, a policy under ACCESS CONTROL to log web-sites to the logs, and some ad-type web-sites listed under the WEBSITE FILTER section. Other than the disconnecting issue, the entire router works great, it does exactly what I want it to.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I think I found it for ya.  ;)

Just check the board feature 'Show the last posts of this person.' in a users profile if you are missing a post from a particular user.
A feature I appreciate in forums like this to find out if a user has said anything useful - ever.  ;D

Ha ha, thank you for that tip, much appreciated. Obviously it was my fault, I posted the first message in the Beta code forum. I have since deleted that first post. Thanks again.

I need more information, like which internet mode you're using the DIR with DHCP client or PPPoE? If it's DHCP client check if you can get an IP when you connect your PC to the internet directly with the ADSL modem only? If you can't get an IP on your computer then check your modem configuration and/or whether it's fubar.
I use PPPoE and when I had similar problem with my ADSL line, it was actually because of problem on the ISP line and not the DIR. Calling up the ISP and ask them to check the line quality fixed it for me.

I'm using this router with PPPoE, supplying the username and password which presumably the router hands on to the DSL modem. My previous Linksys router never lost the connection and while line problems can happen at any time, if it was the line wouldn't the line problems continue, regardless of router? I noticed some people had luck turning off DNS Relaying, I've done the same, I'll see what the result is. Thanks.
