iPhone loses connection to DIR-655
« on: October 03, 2009, 08:26:10 AM »

Hi,

I have a DIR-655 hardware version A4 and firmware v1.21, and my iPhone 3GS keeps losing its connection after periods of non-use.  When I try to browse the web, the prompt that comes up first says "Incorrect Wi-Fi Password", so I enter the correct password again, then click join it will give me an error saying it can't connect or on some occasions it will join o.k., then lose the connection later on after I stop actively using the internet.

I'm wondering if anyone else is having the same problem with their iPhone and have figured out the solution.

For the times where it won't connect at all, I was able to go into the router admin site from my laptop and delete the wifi connection for the iPhone.  Then it reconnected o.k, but I don't want to keep doing this forever...

Thanks!

You could try doing a DHCP reservation for the iPhone.  Its under Setup > Network Settings after logging into the router's admin pages.

Did that help? I NEVER had this problem with my older D-Link DI-524 router. I just bought a new D-Link DIR-825 router running 2.01NA. I've tried changing all the authentication settings. I "think" that when I had it set to WPA2 only it didn't fail. But I have a PC that doesn't support WPA2 so I'm having to use WPA or auto WPA/WPA2. Since then I can't make it stay connected without the "incorrect wifi password" error sometimes.
I've tried switching from AES to TKIP to both with no effect.

I may try the IP reservation. I also noticed a message about some other machine using the same IP address. Not sure how that could happen. Not many machines on my network today.

Actually, the IP reservation on partially helped.  I thought it had gone away at first, but it didn't.  It just made it happen less frequent.

So, the next thing I tried was changing the wireless channel to 11 (it had been set at the default channel of 6 I think).  That seems to have helped so far, but I'm keeping an eye on it.

I suspect this is an issue that might be fixed with a firmware upgrade, but I'm afraid to upgrade to the latest version given all the problems I've seen posted in these forums about the DIR-655 v1.3x firmware.

Hi,

The ipod uses .11G yes ?  If so, I might set the router to .11N & .11G Only   NOT  B,G,N   or if you dont need .11N then maybe just .11G only (I think thats available but maybe not...)

Do not upgrade to FW 1.32 for now....at least I wouldn't....

Also, Wireless Partition might need to be enabled or if enabled, try disabling it....save and reboot the router....

I already have it set to 802.11n and g only, so that doesn't fix it.
The problem does not appear unique to one router, maybe the family of routers since I have a DIR-825 not a 655.
The apple forums also report this problem with some other routers, but there so far does not appear to be a simple fix nor pattern of failure. But its hard to google, since most hits find people who can't figure how to setup their routers.
In the case we're reporting, it does work, but frequently asks for a password. Not all the time, just some times. Often enough to be extremely annoying.

I don't have IPhone but some other wireless phones did not overtake the value of the Group Key Update Interval in the encryption settings.

Normaly each client will receive this value from the AP (standard 3600 = 1 hour) when connecting but some devices had internaly a setting of 1800 and did not change it - so every half an hour the lost connection an asked for the password.
Perhaps this setting is changeable in the iPhone or you can see the value and change the setting in the DIR.

Second cause may be setting encryption to auto.  A lot of clients will loose connection from time to time with this setting. Use either WPA-PSK / TKIP or WPA2-PSK /AES.

No way to change those settings on the iPhone as far as I can tell.

I tried the DHCP reservation... no change still fails.

I want to try the authentication permutations you mentioned, WPA-PSK / TKIP or WPA2-PSK /AES. I "think" my problems started when I changed from having it set to "WPA2 only". Unfortunately, I have a machine on the network which only supports WPA/AES. But I don't need to use it for a while so I'll try these other permutations.

Someone else is reporting the same problem with a DIR-615 as well.

BTW: The iPhone doesn't let you set much of anything. I tried forcing it to use WPA (ie not either). Didn't help. I then forced it to use WPA2... didn't help either. Even setting those is a stretch on the iPhone. Normally all it asks for it password. It figures out the rest.

Ok, I have now tried every permutation of "WPA mode" and "cipher type", to no avail.
The iPhone is able to connection using any permutation... but it periodically complains about "incorrect wifi password".

I've tried the following combinations:
WPA2 only / AES
WPA /TKIP
WPA/AES
WPA/ auto TKIP/AES
Auto WPA/WPA2 auto TKIP/AES

I've also tried IP address reservation to no avail.
I turned on debug logging in the router. Last entry I see before this pops up is,
debug     UDHCPD sending ACK to 192.168.0.103

This is a deal breaker for me. I use the iPhone constantly on WiFi. My old router, a D-Link DI-524 never had this issue.

I need other ideas of things to try. My only recourse right now is to try a Linksys WRT610N, or give up the whole mess and go back to my old working router.

I found a thread on Macrumors (http://forums.macrumors.com/newreply.php?do=postreply&t=737486) talking about this problem. Several people suggest that the issue is that the iPhone is not properly handling networks that support N. The suggestion is to set the router to G only.

Unfortunately I tried it and it did NOT help my situation. Its failed 3 times within the last 15 minutes, even after rebooting both the router and phone.

As I've said earlier in the thread, I've tried every permutation of WPA, WPA2 with AES and TKIP ciphers. The iPhone is running firmware 3.1.2.

I did not have a problem when using my old D-Link DI-524. Problem is occurring with the DIR-825 and matches the problem described in this thread. I've also seen a thread with the same issue with the DIR-615.

Did you replace the router after you updated your iPhone to 3.1.2 or 3.1 for that matter?  3.1.2 just came out a week or two ago.   One thing that you could try as it fixed some other network related things is to reset the iPhone's network settings and rejoin your wireless network.  I know you said you tried the different cyper options and such, but it may be worth a try.

General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings
then redo your wifi config with the "best" cypher options you can ( WPA2, AES ).  works fine on my 655 and I know that iPhone OS 3.1+ had some issues with wifi for some people until they fully cleared the network settings.
